Oh, man - I hate to hear this....... what do you think started the cascade? I can’t see a starter causing the timing to jump...... :dung:

No the starter was not the cause. It was overpowered while trying to start the motor AFTER the timing slipped.

I think the timing chain was loose and when doing 70 on the highway at 2500 rpm steady, it must have jumped and that caused the timing to me off and made the engine die.

I hate it for you I really do. But I think your exactly right about what happened.
I hope you get it fixed ASAP.

Holy poop that’s some Grenaided stuff, it really sucks the joy outta Jeeps when they do that

At least it was the Jeep’s fault - Dain had nuthin to do with it. It really sucks when something grenades itself and you’re to blame..........

Turns out that at TDC, the timing mark was not in the range of numbers on the block. Using TDC I set the distributor and got it to start and run.

I'll be interested to see what you find. My timing marks are way off too.
Hopefully you can just buy a new ring gear and not have to replace the entire flywheel.

Really won’t know until I tear into it. But this motor is kind of tired. And starting to give me blow by. Might be time for a v8.

Thanks. That started really gave up after trying so hard. I was able to shake it and hear rattles. And the bolts holding the case together gave up as well. Would have been nice to see it pop in slow motion.

That would have caused a queasy feeling....

Today I replaced that remanufactured alternator that I installed two weeks ago. I did my research and tried to learn as much as I could about an alternator upgrade (properly) since I added the MSD system and the electric fan. I went from a 63 amp OEM 10si alternator to a 94 amp remanufactured 12si.

Sunday night I was looking under the hood (for something else) and noticed that the alternator had a flaw in the construction process. If you're familiar with the difference between the 10si and the 12si: the raised ridge that seals next to the ridge on the fan was not there on the case side. I could see through a nice big gap right into the case behind the fan. That's just not how it works. Stoped by the parts store yesterday and they took care of me and I ordered a brand new 12si model 7294-3. It was there on my way home from work so I grabbed it and installed it when I got home. It's very nice.

I'll go grab some photos and post them to show the difference between the remanufactured and the new unit.

Very nice! Do you suffer from the same illness I do? When I put the new reman in I degreased it and cleared it with wheel paint

Wasn't the factory timing gear some type of "plastic"?

I have no clue. But I seriously hope not. Or if so, I hope that when this motor was “rebuilt” by my friend who sold it to me (and installed it 6 years ago) a metal one was installed.

The one I rebuilt had a fiber/plastic one Looked like there was not much life left to it. Replaced with steel

Finally got a high output alternator that fits my CJ! I also beefed up the wiring to 2 gauge with a AMC 150 amp fuse. The engine seems to run a lot better, but I've just driven it around the neighborhood. I checked the voltage, and with all the lights and radios on, it's now reading 14.45 volts, before it was like 12.8. Thanks everyone on the forum for helping me out with this!

Could not be happier! :D

Where did you get that cable from the alternator to the fuse? I have not seen 2 gauge cable with that small of a connector on it for the alternator stud, it's like a 10mm nut.

I have not done that, but I like that idea!
