What did you do to or with your CJ today?
Took the dash out and removed the old speedo, waiting on that brown truck with my new Speedhut speedo. Says its out for delivery..........whenever that is. Seems i'm on the end of their route because I never get anything early in the day.
In the meantime I did receive a new volt gauge and got it installed. Was just a little tight going in but some emory cloth on the cut out fixed that. When I unpackaged it the light bulb was busted, no biggie cause I had a bunch of spares from the old speedometer.
Also fixed a couple of lighting problems. Side marker on passenger front and drivers rear were both out. Just a loose bulb in the front but a broken wire in the rear.
Fedex delivered my DUI distributor, and live wires yesterday. I guess I could start the install on that while waiting for the speedometer but I only like to have one project going at a time.
Been reading the instructions on line for the Speedo, kind of confusing on a few things, I guess it may make more sence when I get it in hand. I did label all the wires I pulled from the old one so hopefully all will go well.

UPS came a little earlier than usual yesterday so I started on the speedometer install. Finished it up today. I'll give a blow by blow on my build thread.................

Finally got around to putting on new straps and u-joints on both driveshafts

Man, I have NEVER liked swapping u-joints... one of my least favorite tasks.

Quite right old boy ! Always feel like something is going to break or go wrong. On the trail is a bad day

This was a bad day. On the trail I had 3 u joints fail on my within an hour. Ended up getting dragged off of the trails. This pic was taken fixing the second at a flat spot. Only made it about 50 feet before the third went. I have moved to the u bolts for the Transfer Case joints.

Oh, man - that does suck. Any reason for all to go out at once? Was Gert with you? He tends to be hard on stuff......

If you are asking me, I think it was neglecting to grease them regularly, and really having to throttle through obstacles since my gearing isn’t the best for slow crawling. I am looking forward to seeing how things change with the 4:1 Transfer Case I have now.

Well - they were consistent if nothing else. Three that quick is wild

Surprisingly,I got both driveshafts done in about 2 hours. I especially like that the bolts for the new straps are hex head instead of that funky 1/4 in 12 point that came stock. I replaced them with Moog greaseless all the way around.

When I did the double cardan rear driveshaft I switched to u-bolts, only one left with straps is the Dana 30 yoke. Only downside using u-bolts is not do not over tighten them and oblong the bearing cap leading to failure. One thing that can't happen with straps.

Took a little spin out in the country and noticed my brand new Stewart Warner volt gauge wasn't working.
Got home and saw that the hot wire was just dangling up under the dash. I re-used the old push in connector from the old gauge and noticed it was a little loose.
So like a dumb arse I reached up under the dash feeling around with my fingers for the stud on the voltmeter, thought I found it, plugged it in, turned the key and poof!!!!! Smoke and a pop from the fuse panel. Evidently I plugged the hot wire onto the ground stud. There goes 40 something bucks down the drain.
My old volt gauge worked fine but the glass was cracked and the bezel was pretty beat up, sooo I pried the new glass and bezel from the new gauge, pried the same off the old one and switched them out. Perfect fit!!! Not sure what brand it is but I did see "made in America". Anywho, got it installed using the correct connectors this time and all is well.
Bench tested the new gauge and it pegs out so yep.............it's fried.

Sounds like one of my days.....

Got these in today. Talk about comfy...

Second pic is what I found when I pulled the driver's. One of the POs evidently installed what appears to be an "suspension damper" LOL

And to think...all this time I just thought she rode stiff

Probably could have pulled that out and put it back, sent these back and saved some $

Took the soft top off and put the bikini on, then it rained.

That’s the problem with CJs made in the 80s their geared for fuel economy and too much speed for off road. You will enjoy the control you have with the 4.1 gears.
