I guess I've been under a rock. What's the story on this vinyl as a coating ? Does it last?

The stuff I was looking at claimed 5 - 6 years horizontal surfaces, up to 10 on verticals. My neighbor did his older Mercedes. Paint went from red to a weird fuchsia. He bought a bright red vinyl and over the corse of a week, did the whole car. I helped him with the larger areas, and the stuff conforms better than it should. A lot of folks will wrap a new car, and when the wrap comes off, paint is still factory new.......

Vinyl - cheap and easy paint job. Protects paint from trail scratches and small knicks and dings.
On my rig. I'll be happy if it last 3 years. I did no prep on my primered rig. But looks good to me. Bring on the rockrash!

Nicely done. It cracks me up the guys that do this professionally always stress to not try it at home - that it's much more difficult that's it appears...... that's 
. A little patience and you can turn out a nice wrap job - as you have proven. The grille was a lot of fun, wasn't it??

Did you have any areas that you had to deal with lining up seams or edges of the vinyl? If so how noticeable are they?

Quite a few. But only on the hood and grill. Only because I screwed it up. The hood was the hardest and I put seams on the sides where it turns down 90 degrees. I'm going to put some writing there anyway so it will never get noticed.
All the other panels are small and flat. Super easy do.
Do the hood last. By that time you will have made the mistakes and know how to deal with the challenging parts.
And seams - just overlap 1/4" - 1/2"

3M makes a seam tape that helps to prevent peeling, but I don't think they offer it in matte. Just gloss.

No need. This stuff sticks very well. Once its heated up its like its glued to itself.
I'll get some photos of the seams close up.

It seams latex based and thick. I will start by using a razor blade to try to remove it. I am worried that it may have stained the tub. Less worried about the dash as I plan to redo one over the fall and winter and swap it in. I picked one up this past weekend. But it still sucks.

If it is latex, and it hasn't been on there too long, you might want to try soaking the affected area by covering it with wet rags and keeping them wet for a while to see if you can soften the paint before having to work you knuckles to the bone scraping, and inevitably scratching the finish.

Being wet will probably help. I noticed this morning that with the dew, it seemed to come off easier. I am making progress, but there is splatter everywhere. Ugh
