Looks like a modified YJ top

Well I nearly blew myself up guys! I was filling up at the gas station. I could hear it get up to the filler neck, but the pump wouldn't stop. A gallon latter it shut off, so I went to buy a pack of cigarettes. When I came back there was a big puddle, and when I took a closure look I could see gasoline dripping down. I pushed the CJ5 to the parking lot, and when I got underneath, I could see this tube sticking out of the tank dripping fuel directly on the exhaust pipe. By some miracle it didn't auto-ignite. I put together a Macguyver plug job with what I had, so I could get back home. In the 15 years I've owned this vehicle, the tank has never overflowed. The Jeep Gods were shining down on me today. 🙏

So that hose is clamped to a bolt ?

I couldn't find a bolt big enough to properly plug up the hose, so I used a hose clamp. It's not a permanent solution. I just need something to get me back home without leaving a trail of fire. 😉

I had a shop a few years back replace my broken Howell TBI with a Carter 2BBL. I guess they never bothered plugging up the return line. Just snipped off the hose and left it hanging there. Again seriously lucky there wasn't a fire.

Wow, dripping onto the exhaust pipe! Hopefully it’s cool enough back there not to ignite it.

If it was just dripping at the cooler side of the exhaust pipe, I probably would have been fine. The problem is due to those damn laws of fluid dynamics, the gasoline flowed down the pipe near the catalytic converter, then finally dropped to the ground. Again a miracle it didn't auto-ignite.

Recently I : acquired and installed a hard top // replaced front leaf spring bushings // front sway bar bushings (both with the pretty red ones) // I figured out (and mostly stopped) a knock I had in my front end driver side // drove my Jeep 120 miles round trip to get a pr of metal doors (those suckers are heavy) //

I drove home with the passenger door on and latched close but the driver side was hitting the windshield so had to put it in the back. Evidently my top is torgued a little (I'll address that soon). I had already replaced tie rod ends, drag link, adj steering gear, etc. and still wasn't happy with stability and steering. So, based on symptoms without measuring, reading posts on the topic, and watching You Tube vids, I added steel castor shims. These made a HUGE difference and I feel it now drives about as good as a front leaf spring lifted Jeep can.

The knock : to hear and feel it I had been driving slow and turning hard over left or right because when it's in the garage with front wheels off the ground I could not duplicate the noise with my wife turning the wheel lock to lock. Nor could I notice any looseness/movement that could cause it. Finally I discovered I could sit still and turn the wheel (with tires on the ground) to duplicate it. I'm so, so glad I did not order a steering gear (I was thinking that's all it could be). I had my wife turn the wheel while I was under there. A single leaf (of the stack of leafs) on the driver side would "pop" sideways 1/4" and slap the rebound clip. All I've done so far it drove a screwdriver in there to separate it enough to grease the top and bottom of that leaf. That took away/deadened 90 % of the knock.

Got tired of driving 45+ and not hearing most songs, so I installed a third speaker in my overhead CB console. There's a speaker cut-out I never used before. Should have been a quick job, but like any old Jeep it dragged on for a week. Just a rats nest of bad wiring and splices where the PO used duct tape. In the end it was worth it. I can finally hear Stairway to Heaven on the freeway. 😁 👍

I’ve been putting off touching the wiring. I think that’s why I haven’t even attempted trying to figure out what’s going on with my horn.

Amen to that! That's why it took me 12 years to finally get around to it. 👍

So my recent overflowed tank incident got me motivated to install those rollover valves I purchased 4 months ago. I also move the return fuel line, so there's no chance of it dumping fuel on the exhaust pipe again. 🤞

Got my Classic Enterprises driver’s side rear quarter panel. I need to decide if I want to use pieces of it, or the whole slab. I’m torn, lol. It’d be nice to have 1 solid piece of metal there vs little patches everywhere.

Can someone explain to me why I would continue getting positive fuel pressure coming up the return line? I walked into my garage this evening and the whole place smelled of fumes. I got underneath and that damn return line was dripping again, and probably all day. I added a second hose clamp and wrenched the hell out of it until the leak stopped. I thought I was dealing with a simple overflow issue, but I've driven her 40 miles, so why would it start leaking again. Is it some kind of syphon effect I'm dealing with? If so, is there anyway to stop it? Thanks!

Is it functioning as the vent now?

I no longer have a working charcoal canister. On a sunny day I can see the vapor escaping from the hose that used to go to the charcoal canister.

Yeah it's acting like a syphon. I thought I plugged it up, but it keeps leaking, but will stop when I unscrew the filler cap. I think it all started when I put in new rollover valves. I replugged it again this evening. I'm hoping it will do the job. Wish me luck! 🤞

Good luck! I’ve thought of trying to hook it to my air cleaner somehow. Maybe some of the vapors would get sucked down the carb. With my luck it’d throw off the AF mixture and make it run like :dung:.
