What did you do to or with your CJ today?

Started mine today after a couple weeks of not driving it. Rode about doing assorted chores. I could take the doors off but at 5 am its around 30 degrees a bit chilly for that sort of thing.

I can understand that. We are 40 - 50 degrees warmer.

Spent this beautiful morning loosing brain cells replacing a knocking fuel pump.

Finished installing a refreshed NT 30 in the 66. Heavy steering, flipped, all new joints, brakes and bearings, u bolt skids, refreshed warn hubs, re geared to 5.38 with new helical LS. Also did a hanging brake pedal and late CJ master.

Fantastic, straight geometry and plenty of clearance. Your not going to have any hint of bump steer!

You can never have enough. I have collected over the last few years spare parts for trail breakdowns. I know I don’t have everything.

Replaced alternator belt and power steering belt. Easy you say? P.O. replaced alternator with an oversized one, so it has a home made top bracket extension made from angle iron. And I was unfamiliar with the power steering bracket setup, so i removed the pivot bolt behind the pulley. PITA to reinsert. I actually removed or loosened every bolt near the power steering pump. LOL

Today I finished up a few small projects on my ‘73 CJ5 . I removed, wire brushed, treated with phosphoric acid the battery tray and all of its associated parts, and then painted everything black. I made a hold-down cross piece out of a piece of teak that I had. It’s a tough wood and needs no coating of any sort. Lasts forever. Battery in new, too. Second, I replaced the fuel filter, re-routed the fuel line from over the top of the valve cover to in front of it, and added a little support post that keeps it from moving around too much. And finally, I removed the steering column, painted it, removed the coupling and cleaned and added grease to the u-joint.

Well I didn’t do it to, or with my Jeep, I did it for my Jeep. I love her and want to take her far on a few trips. But driving far in the summer with no ac and getting older, I knew I needed some help. Finally found something to tow my Jeep with when I do a long trip. This is the 4th Toyota we have had. I was looking for a pickup but most are beat up with high mileage. I found this and is in great condition. I had my buddy who has been working on Toyotas for 50 years and at a Lexus dealer for 25 years give it a look and drive. Even he sail it looks like someone took well care of it. So after a good check coming up, I will know what if any maintenance is needed. Then I’ll be ready for the next adventure in July.

Getting loose ends tied-up ahead of heading to Moab in a couple weeks.

Oil and filter change. Brake fluid change. Coolant change. All zerks greased. Air filter change, etc.

Just maybe next year for me there. Luckily I punched my bucket list on that one, two years ago. Colorado and just maybe upper Wyoming this July-early August.

The Easter Jeep Safari is a shi$ sh@w nowadays. Better to go there any other week.
But, nostalgic for me. So, gotta go for the 60th annual. Bet I can count the CJs I see there on one hand.
