What is this hose on top of front axle?

It's a vent hose. You'll want to keep it out of the water.

I figured as much.
At first I though it might be some sort of air locker hose that was never hooked up. But then I thought no way I would've gotten that lucky with this new-to-me jeep.

Thanks for the reply

The purpose of the vent is to avoid pressure building up in the housing as the fluid and air inside heat up from use. You should have one on your Transfer Case as well.

Vents are on both axles, t'case, and manual trannys.

Thanks for the replies.
I noticed it while replacing my exhaust manifold and figured it was some sort of vent.

I'm still new to jeeps, just bought one about 6 weeks ago, so I'm still learning about it.
So far, this site has been an awesome source of info.
I'm sure I'll have many more questions and I have no doubt I'll be able to find the answers here.

You REALLY must buy a copy of the factory service manual!

Collins Brothers Jeeps and Jeep Parts

Chilton's or Haynes are not that good with the details.

That's definitely on my to-do list.
I'm getting the basic stuff fixed in order to pass inspection.
Then I plan to go through everything else and see what else needs to be serviced and/or replaced.

Where can a manual be bought at a reasonable price. I saw one on amazon I believe and it was like $200 dollars.

Why don't you look at the link I posted.
Get a printed copy-The PDF type are a PITA

What inspection is this, on a 36 year old Jeep??

Basic state inspection.

The guy I bought it from, had bought it from out of state.
He intended to use it on his deer lease only, so he never registered it or had it inspected.
When I got it, the blinkers didn't work and the exhaust headers had a couple of cracks.
I fixed the blinkers. It was a bad splice between the ignition switch and the fuse box.
I now have installed a new exhaust manifold and will be taking it to a muffler shop next week to get the rest of the exhaust installed.
Then add it to my insurance, get it inspected, and register it.
Then I can legally drive it on the streets.

I found one on ebay for $13, a little yellowing on the outer edges but otherwise in good condition.
