Hey guys, there are two lines that run up behind the rear driver fender from the gas tank. I can see a small module and larger one. What are they and are they necessary? Non-emission state. 1980 CJ5 Iron Duke.

Liquid & Rollover check valves.

Also part of the EVAP/Charcoal canister system.

Ok, can this system be deleted safely? Or would it be possible to cap the canister line with a hard foam (breather end)?

You would be better off leaving that system functioning and maintained. It provides breathing for the fuel tank with insures proper fuel pump operation, plus in event of a vehicle rollover it will prevent fuel from running out through the charcoal cannister. There is also a replaceable filter on the bottom of the charcoal cannister to allow clean air into it for gas tank ventalation. I have tried it and it works quite well.

Leave it in place.

Depending on the vehicle laws, emission testing, in your state, you may need to keep it.

Is it safe to remove it? Modern vehicles roll over and catch fire. Not often, but they do. Before EVAP, gas tanks were vented through the gas cap. Vehicles rolled over back then. Fires happened.

I won't tell you what to do, you'll need to make that decisions yourself. However if you decide to remove it, keep all the parts, as they will have value to someone who needs to make their CJ pass an emissions test.

Yeah I'll keep it in place. I'll make a coffee can and fill it with broken charcoal, old school style. Cant hurt.
