Doing some cleanup to keep my 84/AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l CJ7 running until I rebuild... and came across this. The PO had clumsily hacked most of the emissions stuff out, and some was capped (some was uncapped, some of the caps were dryrotted causing bad vaccum leaks). I've accounted for most of them, but this thing I'm not sure about... what is it and what does it do? Can I leave it alone or should it be capped as well if not in use? When running I don't feel any suction from it so I assume it's some sort of check valve.

The small red x can really be frustrating. Ive asked this question plenty of times myself. I try to leave it alone but it never works. The small red x must be fixed. Sorry for harrassing you , just couldnt resist. :D

OMG! That thar is funny I don't care who you are. We need a knee slapping smiley. lol

CTO.. IF its not hooked up make sure youi plug it or you will have a vacuum leak.

This xs 2 ;)

Makes much more sense now and I'm going to plug it since that whole leg of the vaccum setup is running to the distributor anyway.

Also, that nipple up on the carb is capped now; it was dry rotted so I took it off just before I took the pic.

After fixing those couple of things I took it back out yesterday and it had noticeably less shaking at idle and better low end.

Thanks guys!

Just taking a quick look at your pic again seems that you have a few more vacuum lines missing.. that is not a bad thing but make sure that every thing is plugged or capped with tight fitting caps. your EGR valve is missing the vacuum line which I thing came off the CTO. I bet you can find at least 2 more lines leaking.

Thanks Jimbo, I looked again and think I see what you mean. The lineat the bottom of the carb I already capped, and the line hanging free (bottom center of pic) was the fuel return that I hooked back up to fuel filter as suggested in a previous post. Are you talking about the open one on the diaphragm in the bottom right of the photo? If so, I didn't even see that one and will cap it today, thanks for catching that.

You're right there are probably more I haven't found yet. Every time I pop the hood I find new ones. I wonder why the PO yanked it all out like that without bothering to cap anything. He even put a generic pie plate air cleaner on instead of leaving the factory one, and the bottom of it doesn't poperly seal, which I'll replace when I put in the MC2x00 I've yet to buy :)
