I have a 1980 cj5 with a 304, 4 speed trans. what trans (T176) and transfer case (Dana 300) do i have. they need rebuilt. i got the jeep new, it now has 140k. trans pops out of 2nd and some time the transfer will pop out gear

Just the fact that you are the original owner is very cool...

Good luck with the tranny/Transfer Case rebuilds....and hang onto her!! Keep it in your family.

Congratulations on being the one owner............I am also a 1-owner on my 65 CJ w/ 27k miles.

Not hard to do this work if you have the space, desire and tools.

But , If your not into gear work or perhaps do not have the pullers, press & several snap ring pliers available , find a good gear person in your area and get them to do a rebuild.........Most times labor only for the Transmission and Transfer Case on there bench is about $AMC 150 -$200 each.

My 1980 CJ 7 has the 258 with the T-176 and the 300 and probably more owners than I can count on one hand. Both leak a bit but I dont have the dough right now to get them repaired.


:)Al...............oil seals if that's all it needs are among the easiest things to replace.
