What Transmission will replace BW-T4

My Tranny bit the dust last night.... lost 3rd gear with a load pop and bang... thought I lost a drive shaft, pulled over and everything was intac but there is a lot of grinding and rattling coming from the Transmission .
so i leamped it home with no 3rd gear....

I have an 82, AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l w/ the borg-warner T-4
I have a buddy that can rebuild it for 375 + parts, but I am leaning toward getting a better stronger trans, will the T-176 bolt right up or will I have to change bell housing..etc.

what about the T-5 , upgrade to 5sp? is it just as weak as the T4?

any guidence would be greatly apprecaited

IMOP I would just junk the T-4 and get a T-176 and it will bolt right up to your AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and Dana 300 . The T176 is a medium duty Transmission and a lot better then the T4 I also wouldn't go to the T-5 it's just as weak. Unless its just a street rig, I would go with the T176.

I concur with 1986CJ7. I have done quite a bit of research on the matter since I have a T-5 where the 2nd gear sync is going out. The T-4 and T5 are supposedly the worst transmissions ever put in Jeeps. You can get T4's and T5's up here in Washington on CL for as low as $100 in operating condition since people do engine swaps and just decide to replace them because of their rep. With that being said, I have decided to stick with my T5 since I can replace it for dirt cheap. Hell it lasted for 29 years so it can't be so bad. That is the same reason I am sticking with my 258I6 too.
