Hey guys,

So my 3rd and 4th gear syncros are gone on my 1981 Jeep CJ5 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , so I was looking at rebuilding it, but i'm still not 100% sure which Transmission I have. I'm pretty sure it's a Tremec T-176 , but I don't want to buy a rebuild kit without knowing for sure. I suspect it's the T-176 because its a 4-Speed found on 1980-86 CJ's, and has the same shift pattern with reverse positioned to the right and down.

Just to be completely sure, are there any model numbers that I could visually inspect on the Transmission , so I know what I have?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

The SR4 tranny's shift pattern has reverse to the left and up towards the dash. The T-176 shift tower sits directly over the gear box. You might also have a T-4 . The shift tower sits behind the gear box on the tail shaft on that one. There's no telling what a previous owner has put in there. Pictures would help.

OP-Post up some pictures of the shift lever and side shots of the tranny.
You say the 3-4 syncros are gone-How so? How much free-play do you have in the clutch pedal??
When was the last time you check'd the oil level in the tranny or t'case???
