I recently got a Hesco EFI system upgrade for my 83 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l from a friend but didnt come with the harmonic balancer. Do you need to use the V belt balancer from Hesco or will one from a 4.0l work the same?

Did you contact Hesco ?

What model # kit? As long as you have not changed any engine internals your balance needs are the same. Does the engine now need a crank trigger?

I searched hesco.us and I can't find any full / complete EFI kits.

Hesco doesn’t make those kits any longer because from what I heard was a lack of computer controllers. I have a friend that actually bought their test stand engine and installed it in his Scrambler.

No internals will be changes but yes there will be a crankshaft position sensor installed.

I can't answer that without having a manual. Can you attach it?
My thought is it might be because you may have modify your balancer to attach the trigger or something like that.

Hesco’s balancer has notches that are necessary in order to trigger the crankshaft position sensor. I believe the 4.0 engine picked up the crankshaft position from the flywheel/flexplate.

I thought it had to do with the CPS...
You need to come up with your own way of triggering the CPS if you do not use their balancer.

Friend of mine tried machining a stock balancer to read - didn't work. If you can still get their balancer its a no brainer to buy it - just hope its still available.

You either need to use the Hesco balancer, as others have stated or you will need to use a 4.0 flywheel they have the correct slots cut to engage the fuel to the system. The 4.0 and AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l are both internally balanced so it doesnt hurt to swap them. If you do have to use a 4.0 flywheel its a good time to consider an AX15 swap.

Hesco has this balancer available for 4.0 engines. It's pricey though - at $359. Hesco Link

Quadratec also has it, but wants $399 for it. Quadratec link

I purchased a 1984 CJ7 4 or 5 years ago with a HESCO AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l EFI conversion kit installed but not functional. I was able to talk with the guys a HESCO who directed me to the engineer that designed the kit - after several phone calls of me asking goofy question while trying to find missing parts he told that the kit is assembled from parts from a 1994 YJ with a few exceptions. I was told that if I needed parts to go to Rockauto and purchase them.. The VSS sensor is from a Durango I will have to check the year and 3 or 4 other parts that HESCO produced. I have the installation manual, packing list, trouble codes, and trouble shooting tips. I am more than happy to share them with you if that will help.

I ran it for a couple of years then rebuilt the engine swapped the cam & head... I replaced the HESCO (Mopar) ECU with a MegaSquirt 3 w/MS3X expansion to have a more flexible system along with sequential fuel & coil on plug ignition.

The HESCO system is a very nice system that will serve you well. If you need any of the documentation or have questions I am happy to offer what I have.

Great post! Can you scan the documentation?

I have digital versions of all of the documentation - let me know where you'd like it posted. I am thinking a HESCO Section in the Downloads... ???

The damper I used is Mopar Part #P5249688 which I see is no longer available. However I think the HESCO part #HES9199ED is the same part (few extra bucks)... If you have a V-belt instead of a serpentine belt you will need Mopar part #P5249687 which is still available plus a crank sensor & mounting bracket if you do not have them as part of your kit...

You can attach them to this thread, put them here -->> https://jeep-cj.com/community/downloads/categories/powertrain.5/ or email them to me and I'll put them where they belong (in your user name.) It's nice that you have the documentation to share.
