Ok - I have another knucklehead wiring question, this time ref the harness. Since the CJ is all over the garage, I was gonna use an extra wiring harness that came with the Jeep to get the rewire started while sitting inside where it's warm. After comparing it to a 1980 wiring diagram, I found a couple discrepancies. Have a couple different wire colors, but I'll trace those and see if the circuit is the same, but I have a couple connectors that don't show on the diagram. I also have a couple connectors on the harness that I don't need, but that's not a big deal either (The Qudratrac connector). Here's the harness connector that I can't find on the diagram...(the smaller one on the right)

1_zps9vpbnxns.webp

2_zpsfwido5xb.webp

Here's the larger connector in the diagram.... any idea what the smaller connector is for?

2A_zps25d5ralu.webp

Next question - this bulb socket is wired to be the qudratrac light.... any chance it would also act as the 4 wheel drive indicator?

3_zpsfelnoywq.webp

The lower bulb socket below is not on the diagram as it's colored, but it's the same type socket as the Qudratrac socket - think it'll work as the Brake warning light?

4_zpskznnvkqt.webp

The next issue - in the pic below is a connector coming off of the steering column connector with red and pink leads......The larger one looks like a relay socket. But neither apear to be on the harness diagram. Any ideas?

12_zpsamiwe7at.webp

Here are a couple pics of the spare harness..... it's too clean not use, and I see no signs of butchery...

As soon as the weather warms up a bit, I'm going to compare this harness to what's actually in the Jeep. I was just hoping I could get a jump on this while I was refurbing gauges.

Thanks for any help :chug:

SORRY :o Can't help you with the wiring issues.
BUT:eek:, I see we use the same type band-aids. :poke:

Ok - I'm adding you to the list of those whose replies are not to be read with a mouthful of tea......... dang, man - that stuff went everywhere... yeah, I have a habit of sticking fingers and thumbs where they don't belong.....

Well if the colors did't change too much, the red and pink, the clip on side is the brake light switch connector, and the connector coming from it with the "T" shaped connector is for the cruise control.(may have that one backwards, but are brake light and cruise control.) Was in the harness whether you have cruise control or not. Going to use mine (Cruise leg) to operate a third brake light on my hard top or spare carrier.

The connector next to the brake light switch connector is the connector for the tail lights and gas gauge. (green, green w/tr, pink, red)

The connector next to the headlight connector is for the fog light option. Again there if you have fog lights or not.

The indicator sockets are for the brake and 4WD lamps.

The only thing that looks odd, is the fat yellow wire that appears to have a wire nut on the end.

Looks like you have at least an 84-86 year harness. Cleanest OEM harness I have ever seen. Especially interesting are the heater etc light connectors. Never seen them with rubber ends on them.

Here are some diagrams for an 83 harness (download from Dropbox)in an earlier thread. At the bottom of post #1.

Man - That helps a TON!! Thanks.

And to think I was gonna spend a good bit of time cleaning the current harness. I had forgotten this one was in the spares box.

Ok - after cleaning up the gauges and sticking everything back in the dash for a wiring check, I've run across a couple more unidentifieds..... Here's my progress so far: And yes, I haven't added the radio support strap yet - gone get the wiring straightened out first

K_zpsq5w7d6sz.webp

I have these exiting the wiring harness not far from the fuse block....

L_zpsgxojkcx7.webp

As does this one:

J_zpsakjwrwzy.webp

And these two:

I_zpszicuyizw.webp

H_zpsgl6ely0g.webp

Now, over the last 10 years I've been working on this thing, I think the following switch is the wiper switch - even though I first stuck it where the heater switch goes and took the pic:

D_zpskdgy4lbj.webp

Here it was as wired in the Jeep when I removed the dash:

E_zpsmyu6sb8y.webp

I don't have the two single wires like this on the newer harness, and I don't have the wire color combo anywhere the diagram says is for the heater switch

Can't identify these either:

G_zpss0sqsidp.webp

It is very apparent to me that wiring diagrams are smarter than I am. I always thought I could read em - now I'm questioning that thought LOL..

Any help??

The bottom 2 pics (round and rectangle) are wiper switch and wiper motor connectors.

The round one looks a little "thinner" than what I have seen in the past. But looks to be the same pin configuration as most.

The wiring colors don't always match the FSM. My wiper motor connector didn't match. But, if you match the letters (A,B,C,D) that are sometimes shown on the drawings and match them to the letters on the connector, they all go to the right place.

The orange and black "L" shaped connector could be the hard top interior light connector.

The "L" shaped round push on looks like the E brake warning light connector.

The orange and yellow combo is odd. Orange is typically a gauge light or interior light. Maybe a tach or clock connector?? Found a match on the drawings. It is the emissions maintenance light.

Does the fuse block have AMC or the AMC logo molded into it anywhere?

The heater connector should be one connector, not individual wire connectors.

The black clip on connector still looks like a high beam or brake light connector. What color are the wires and how many are there?

I REALLY appreciate the help - I know I tend to be a very literal person, and if a connector on the diagram isn't labeled or drawn to look like the real thing, and the colors don't match up, I'm lost. Who knows how many hours you have saved me....

I'm bettin then I don't have the proper wiper switch - that connector doesn't match a single connector on the harness....

I'll keep that in mind, but these things aren't drawn for idiots - hence my trouble with them.

That'll be handy since this thing came with an old hard top. I do plan on sticking a bunch of LED lights here and there for interior lights, so may not need that one.

:noteworthy: Oh, man - you ARE all that and a ham sandwich LOL. I highly doubt I'll need that for an 80.....

The heater connector should be one connector, not individual wire connectors.

That's what I had when it was removed from the old dash. I thought two individual connectors was odd, but I wasn't sure. I'm not convinced I have the correct switch for that either.

Not 100% sure-The second picture down, with the round connector looks like the OEM power lead for the dash radio.:dunno:
Where is this lead positioned inside the dash?

Let's see if this helps - I took a few more pics to show everything's orientation in the harness...

Red and gray wires connector is high beam switch.

I'll have to get one of my wiper connectors out and look at it.

Yep you have the wrong (or older than your harness :)) wiper switch.

Yup - same plug I have. I'll just get a new switch to fit the plug.

Thanks, that helps get me headed in the right direction.

Heater switch connector mostly light brown wires, long stretch going to heater resistor on passenger side heater box.

OK-After several cups of coffee-
That's the plug, that goes on the bottom of the P'brake bracket that goes to the speed-O cluster.

Newer style intermittent wiper harness, or know as the 4 wire motor harness.
