Hi all, I am relatively new to CJ’s but I have had a 58 FC for some time. I recently bought a 73 CJ5 and I am going to re-wire it because it is kind of a mess. But there is one thing under the hood that I can’t identify. Can anyone tell me what this thing is? (Photo attached)

Thank you very much!

That's a weird pressurized canister (looks like it has a capped schreder valve.) It goes into the cabin through the firewall (black hose.) Where does it connect and where is the red hose going?
It can't be emissions because it goes in the cabin.

I will investigate that tomorrow. I think it was stock, but I am not sure of that. This CJ sat a long time without being used much, but I can see where people worked on it here and there. Specifically, the wiring is all taped with black electrical tape. I think someone was in there messing with the wiring at some point. That’s what led me to this unit, whatever it is. But I will look tomorrow to try to determine what the black hose is doing and where the red hose goes. Maybe I will just surgically remove the whole thing and see what I can learn! Thanks

When you enlarge the pic, you can see that it is a charcoal canister for emissions. My first thought was it was a camping style propane canister.
In that case I will definitely remove it entirely. I had a feeling it might be associated with emissions but because I know very little about the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l AMC engine I didn’t want to assume anything

It may be some sort of emissions canister but it is not stock. My 72 (which I bought in 76 from my neighbor) does not have it and an emissions tank would never be plumbed into the passenger compartment.

It's odd. The canister mount is bolted to the tub. Where does the line from the canister go to in the tub? Does the tub VIN match the frame VIN ? It also looks like you have a fuel tank vent ( the red hose, probably a "hard" hose) they are usually green.
