Wont engage the rear wd ...

Let me say hello to all of you proud owners of this beautiful machine,which I recently became part of.

I recently got my hands on a CJ7 1980 with the Isuzu 2400cc diesel,my problem is that coming up on the highway the car just went into neutral no noises,no smoke ,no burning anything no oil leaks nothing seems to have broken ,did not hit anything but the only way i can get it to move forward its if a lock the hubs and put in 4wdL I can drive it around slow of course all 4 gears seem to work fine but only if i engage the lock hubs and put it in 4 wdL...I will appreciate all the help

Probably have spun a rear wheel hub on one of the rear axle shafts.
In 2wd, have someone watch the axle and/or nut to see if it spins inside the hub when you let out the clutch. If the plastic covers are still installed over the axle nut, remove them first. Do this test CAREFULLY because if it has spun, it might just grab one more time on it's own. So be ready and be careful.
