1979 CJ7 w/ automatic 4 wheel drive question

New member, first time post. Been reading and researching about a year now, and I am getting ready to purchase my first CJ7 this fall, so I can spend the Winter (and the next 10 years) making it mine.

I have a question on a 1979 I looked at this morning. Other than all the usual stuff to look for, one thing I noticed was that there was no 4 wheel drive selector shift through the cab, but the seller stated the 4 wheel drive still worked.

It is a 79 with the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l inline 6 with automatic tranny, but the gear selecotr for 4 wheel drive should still be there right?

And if it does still work, I can only assume that it is in 4high (hopefully) full time, and the 4 wheel drive works by locking the hubs in.

My question is an easy one - there should still be a 4 wheel drive stick right?

The 4WD selector is in the glovebox. I know absolutely nothing about the GM Turbo 400 automatic Transmission , and very little about thr quadra-trac Transfer Case , other than the selector switch is in the glove box and that both axles have offset differentials.

All 76-79 CJ7 with automatics have the QuadraTrac Transfer Case . It's a full time case that may or may not have a low range. If it has a low range, then the shifter will be on the side of the Transmission tunnel near the driver's seat.

The Quadratec is full time, so it contains some type of differential in the t-case to allow for driving on the pavement. The emergency drive switch in the glove box locks the t-case differential, so it powers front and rear equally (like a regular t-case in 4hi). Typically, there are no lockout hubs on the front axle. If there are, there may have been a part time installed. I don't know exactly how the part time kit works, but it allows for 2wd and 4wd operation similar to a regular t-case. Lockout hubs are then used on the front axle and I believe the emergency drive switch is used for the 2wd/4wd switch.

I don't have any personal experience with the quadratrac, but from what I've read, the biggest issues are lack of low range on some models, and stretching chains with lack of quality replacements.
