1984 CJ7 five speed. I just bought this jeep and its my first CJ. I've been a Cherokee guy in the past but wanted to try something new.
Hey,
I was recently given a 1984 CJ7 (I know its awsome!), and I was wondering if there are any easy tricks for figuring out what size of engine, Transmission , and Transfer Case I have. It is a five speed and from cap and rotor I think its a 6 cylinder. The jeep doesn't run and hasn't ran for about 6 years. The previous owner said the carb never really worked and never got around to putting a new one in. I'm going to drain all the fluids and start looking for a carb. Does anyone have a good suggestion for a carb? I live in Colorado and it will run in the mountains at +10000 ft elevation. I've heard that that can affect how the carb works.

84, most likey 258CI with 5 speed T-5 and Dana 300 . That T-5 has a reputation for being prone to blow up on people. What alot of people don't understand is that with proper gearing the T-5 can last the life of the engine. If you cj has the 2.72 gearing in the rear axle (you can verify by googling AMC20 identification) and your jeep has tires larger than 235 75 15 I'd advise that you either put smaller tires on it or swap in lower gearing to the axles before running it once you get it running.

I never had luck with carbs my suggestion is looking into a Fuel injection set up. But that gets into a $$ crunch and can be time consuming.
