225 sharing parts on 231
It's alive!!!! It fired right up. No odd noises and ran smooth on initial start up even with late timing. Since the timing was late and not advanced I left it and ran the engine up to 2000 RPM and held it there for 20 minutes to break the cam in. It ran flawless for that time but would not idle afterwards. I advanced the timing to get it to idle then tinkered with it until I had the lowest idle, lowest advance with a light, and best vacuum I could get. It is still advanced from stock settings but the cam requires it.
I have a few things to clean up and I will be test driving it in about an hour. I will say it feels like it has some grunt to it. Very responsive throttle.
My exhaust has never sounded so sealed up. No leaks anywhere. My custom butterfly delete worked out well and no leaks on the intake from my custom plug work mating the 225 intake to the 231 heads.
I did mess up though. I only opened the small garage door in front of the Jeep and left the rest of the garage closed. That initial fire up burnt all the oil off the exhaust, and had paint cooking and three minutes in to my cam break in I was dying....I texted my wife and had her open all the doors so I did not pass out! Lesson learned...again
Edit to add...I took it on a test run and it drove great. Lots of power on the low end and it moves along nicely. I got it home and was idling it in the driveway and discovered an issue. The China wall rubber gasket on the front squirted out. It was not leaking oil yet but it was all the way out in one spot. It actually tore the rubber lip that holds it in place. I am pretty sure it was defective in order to do that. Everywhere else that rubber was stuck tight in the gap. Either way it had to be fixed. I tore the intake off the engine and I have everything cleaned up ready to go back together. I am going to run a thick bead of RTV in place of that rubber seal......something I thought about doing from the start as I know those seals have a bad reputation for leaking.
Engine runs smooth, has the odd fire shake at idle and evens out with RPM. Very quiet, my old engine was noisy. I am so happy with how it is coming out......except for doing things twice!!
