Two days ago I went out exploring here on this island. My 74 has been running great until now. I went out about an hour , nice and hot here. I went to a blue hole for a swim with a few friends. I cranked up to leave and hit quite a bit of standing water in the road coming back, the whole jeep got soaked pretty good, not mud just water.

I got home ,let it sit for 15 minutes and went to crank it up and she was missing bad, started to drive it and if I let off the throttle then hit it again after about here times it will run okay until I shift then start over missing again. Today it was missing again but not as bad. I'm not sure where to start. I am on a pretty much deserted island but I can get parts shipped over easy enough. I don't have much access to mechanics at all. I can do some work . Any ideas ? Thanks

I would start with going thru the ignition system. Wiping out the inside of the ignition cap and rotor with wd-40 and inspecting its condition for deposits on the contacts. I am not that familiar with that old ignition system, but would suggest that you become familiar with it via the internet.

Thanks for the reply, I wasn't sure it was safe to put WD-40 in there. It cranked and ran fine today at lunch. I will keep my fingers crossed and try it again this evening.

Is this a breaker type or breakerless distributor. If it is a breakerless and starts missing after engine warm up, that would indicate a bad ignition control module. A bad module also is warm to the touch after engine warm up.

Your distributor cap is probably cracked. When you splashed water some moisture got inside. It's easy to check, when you clean it shine a bright light on the inside and look for it on the outside.

Torxhead thanks a lot , I'm not sure what you mean by breakerless . I will check the module .

OSS I will try taking it off this weekend and inspecting it for that.

It ran fine all day today so I think it dried out. Is there an aftermarket distributer that is waterproof ?

Like in no breaker points, as I recall the "Breakerless" ignition systems came in around that time. The early style breakerless ignition, was not known as a successfull improvement. Later on the CJs were improved with the Ford Motorcraft ignition. There are other options also, like the GM High Energy Ignition. Ignitions can be made waterproof, as they are for the military, but you could try slowing down a bit. It isn't as much fun though is it?

Ok , I understand points. I haven't looked in it yet. When I get a few minutes this weekend I will check it out. I'm not sure which ignition is in it.
