Greetings!
I'm on the downhill side of installing a new engine and have hit a brick wall.
have a 1980 CJ5 with the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l six. Just got a new engine and can't seem to find the correct pickup tube. Have ordered and returned 3 tubes from 3 vendors.
I checked the casting numbers on the old block in it shows it being a 1979 engine.
The new motor is for a 1980 and it was supplied with a new oil pump.
The pickup tubes I've gotten are either turned wrong and hit the side of the oil pan or else the incorrect length.
Did the oil pans change around this time?
I was going to re-use my existing oil pan but I'm thinking maybe I need to buy a new oil pan to match one of these pickup tubes???
:confused::confused::confused:
I'm stuck and would really appreciate any advise or direction.
Thanks!
Christopher

What happened to the PU-tube that you first took out of the engine?

I've still got it. It presses into the oil pump on the suction side but it's not a real tight fit and I didn't want to re-use it, especially after reading the engine rebuild manual saying not to re-use the old one.

Post up a picture of it.
Someone here may know of one.

Not looking for a pickup tube. I need someone with experience that can tell me what I need to make a match.
The new engine is for a 1980 model. My old engine had a casting for a 1979 model. The new engine was a "long block" and it did not come with a carb, intake/exhaust, oil pan, etc.
My old oil pan will not accept any of the three pickup tubes I bought and returned from Quadratec, Morris and Oreily's and none of those vendors are much help.
Someone out there has experience with this issue and that person can tell me if my old oil pan is the issue or maybe what pickup tube I need to order.

Do you have the correct pump? "New" to me brings up a flag.

Tubes are the same from 1972-1981 ....no change.
Found a change in oil pumps for 1982 model year which changed the pickup tube as well.
Maybe you don't have what you think you have.

Got it! The casting numbers on the engine I removed were dated as a 1979. The new oil pump was an exact match to the original unit. Could not find a new pick up tube to match the original one so I ordered a new oil pan for the 1980 engine and there it was. The sump design had changed and apparently the pick up tube also. So the new design pick up tube would not work with the original 1979 oil pan, apparently, so I scrapped the idea of re-using the old oil pan.
So, to get it done I had to replace the oil pan, and I ordered a pick up tube for a 1980 engine and everything went back together properly.
Side note: I went through two Omix Ada oil pans and the mounting holes to the block were almost all about half the diameter of the holes off from matching the block.
Lousy quality control I suppose. I ordered a Crown Automotive pan and it fit nearly perfectly.
