My 72 has front drums and has bad universal joints. Attempting to take off hubs so I can pull the shafts and work on the universals. I purchased the 2 1/16 socket but can't get it on the nut because a round part is in the way. I can't find this part in the manuals and it's in the way to get to the nut. How does this round spacer like part come out?

Put the nose of a punch chisel in the indentations on the locking nut and tap counter clockwise as needed to undo the locking nut.

Thanks for the advice. I used a punch and pounded the hell out of it counterclockwise with a 3 pound hammer. It didn't even think about moving. Any other recommendations? Is it possible it has reverse thread?

Very small allen head screws locking the outer nut in place.
Take some spray cleaner and clean out the small holes looking for the screws.
Did you have auto locking hubs ?
Maybe PO installed this type of wheel locking nuts ?

This does look like an aftermarket installation, follow hagar's advice. There also looks like another wrench will have to be purchased for that inner nut. If you do an internet search you just might find that application in detail, Good Luck.

Thanks again for all who gave advice. Lots of frustration tonight. Took lots of time to get 3 set screws out after I damaged them with the punch, but finally got 2 out and drilled another out. Went back to work with the hammer and punch and couldn't get the outer ring (locking nut) to spin. Still at step 1 and out of ideas.

Well, finally some good news. After heating the locking nut up to almost melting temp I got the nut off. Then was able to remove the hub and brake drum backing plate. Now need to figure out how to get the axle out.

Unbolt and remove the spindle.
Tap gently and it should pop off the knuckle.
If rusted firmly to the knuckle, you might be able to drive a wedge shaped object between the two to assist in removal.
