I’m purchasing a 75 CJ5 not running and needs a tub due to rust.....
I have a 1988 Pontiac Firebird GTA 350 700r4...... want to put the 350 in the Jeep..... Jeep is going to be a father/daughter project.... I’m not sure I can use the 700r4.... but I do want to make it automatic.....
What would be the best Transmission to use....?
What else needs to be changed..??
Can I use stock drive train with the 350...??
Thank you

Although I've heard it can be done, fitting an automatic in a stock wheelbase '5 if very difficult due to the length. I don't know how much is involved in it. The adapter from a Chevy auto to keep Transfer Case will probably run $500-$600 or more.

Do you know what's in the CJ5 now, as far as drivetrain? If it's a 6 cyl with the T-14 3 speed, then you'll need to upgrade the Transmission for a V8. If it's a T-18 4 speed or a V8 with the T-15 3 speed then you can adapt the sbc to it.

The only one that will fit is a TH350. You'll also need an adapter for the Transfer Case .

There are alot of good sites that have a lot of the information you will need.
It's all about how much money do you want to invest to in the project.
I have a GM Turbo 400 in my 78 CJ5 . Its bigger than the 700r4, so it's possible that the 700 r4 might fit. I'd be looking for a blazer 700 r4 to rob the tailhousing and internals from.

I have toyed around with the Idea of putting a Pontiac 421 3 duce motor I have in the shop in my Jeep.
Because the factory GM Turbo 400 Transmission in my Jeep has the BOP bolt pattern and already has the Transfer Case install it should be doable. Just have to build motor mounts, exhaust, clear the steering, splice in the wiring and a couple of hundred other small items.
Lol. Good luck the Pontiac motor has tons of torque.
