I recently purchased my first Jeep which is a 1982 CJ7 6 cylinder. It's bone stock but has been pretty much mothballed for the last 10 years. After doing a complete tune-up and cleaning the idle passages in the carb it will now idle on it's own without having to use the manual choke the previous owner installed since keep the butterfly closed was the only way to keep it running. The question I have is I need to get it smogged but after looking at the sticker under the hood with the emission information on it all it says is this vehicle meets FEDERAL smog regulations. What is involved in the smog test on federal vs CA vehicles?. I have heard that it's not as strict. I have the timing set, idle set, and the idle air mix screws turned in to where it starts to run rough then back out slightly to get a smooth idle

I'm not 100% positive on years and engines an what not, but I know that some years you could get a "NON-CATALYST" system, a "CATALYST" system, and then "CA EMISSIONS" system. Basically, no smog, smog, and legal in CA smog... If you have a CA smog system, there should be a "CHECK ENGINE" light on the dash, on the left side of the steering wheel.

Having never lived in Kaliforneea I have no idea what it will take to pass emissions testing there though.

You can call your local DMV and request the location of a smog referee or your local smog station. After that call him and request a presmog check or conversation. Every one that I worked with was very helpful. If you can't get it to pass, you can spend about $1500 for a howell set-up and pass every time. Good luck.

Elwood, my Kaliforneea smog machine was purchased new here and did not come with one of those lights., FYI. When I did get a t.b.i., I had to add my own check engine light.

i did this on my 77 with a AMC 304 , although it was always a commifornia jeep what i found was needed was air injection (needed new exhaust manifolds to accept them) egr (new intake to accept it) a single exhaust pipe with cats (had dual exhaust all the way out) fuel tank vent system with charcoal canister (this has to be a sealed system they will hook it up to a pressure system and test it) thats all that i can remember now, try the factory manual i know it helped me a lot. here is the thread i started when i was working on it

WELCOME :chug:
I bought my CA. model 1985 Jeep CJ7 new in Ca, and it did NOT have the ck-light.
You have a '49 state' jeep and that is what it is tested to, for emissions/equipment.
YES, get a 'pre-SMOG ' ck done at a referee station with a ck sheet done.
BEST OF LUCK,
LG

I havent done the smog thing for Cali.....but Virginia has a smog test as well and I adjusted many a car ( carb ) back in the day in order for them to pass the smog test. About everyone I did ( that passed ) I had to leave the a/f mixtures screws in enough to cause a slightly rough idle...and they passed. Do as the others have recommended, then adjust for the results that you get from the referee. Good luck. :chug:
