My buddy is getting a 83 right hand drive which looks like a CJ8 .

Specs on the thing
Straight 6
auto
looks like a danna 300 Transfer Case (didnt get a good look it was cold and dark)
Yes it is four wheel drive.

This thing has a hard top with no windows in it but in the back it has a full height door in it.

I will get some pictures of it tomorrow.
Did AMC make four wheel drive DJs or is this some type of special order for up here in Alaska.

An 8?

Sounds like an overseas version. :)

That could be true. It still has the Mail stripes on part of it.

I will post pictures of it tomorrow, than you can see what I mean.

Some how I need to figure out how to get my hands on it. I can think of a lot of things that I could do with it.:)

Have you actually seen this thing? According to my (just done) research - there was never a mail 8... Unless some Alasken (is that a word) county created one... :)

Alaskan Postals. A total run of 270 Cj8s. They came with a World Cab style hardtop with no windows. The inside area was sprayed with foam insulation to keep it warmer. The rear also had a swinging "barn" style rear door instead of a tailgate and liftgate. Some random internet photos attached

That was from a Craigslist ad. Alot of these are making their way down to the lower 48. The top and rear door are very sought after by some folks. You also have to use the doors that came with it as they arent round cornered like Cj doors. I ran across them mainly cause I do alot of specific CJ8 searches. Alot of guys post these up on CJ8 .com

They also sold the van & window style CJ7 & 8 in Venezuela, Australia & other overseas markets. They all use the "World Cab" styled doors.

so what you are saying is this is kinda a rear jeep?

Now you got to hear the story on how it was found.

One of my other buddys was looking for a plow for his truck and there was a add in the paper.

Plow one dollar, so he gives the guy a call and goes to look at it. He gets there and starts talking to the owner and the told him that there was a catch the Plow was attached to a Jeep. If he wanted the plow he needed to take the Jeep. So they haggled for a while and he got the Jeep and plow for nothing.

Now this buddy dosnt wan the Jeep just the plow so he called one of my other buddys and says do you want a right hand drive Jeep. What would you say to a free Jeep?

So needles to say I now have another project to work on. I just need to figure out how to get the 8 for myself.

More to come later today.

wow you learn something new about CJs every day here. I never knew they made postal 8s, or the number of 8s posted was world production.
8s were made in several factories around the world, so when we give a nuber of 50 some thousand made, that is US production only. export and offshore production no one can put a number on. One of the 6s weirdest forms is a model the made in Brazil for military use that had 4 door indents instead of 2.
You know, this is such a great site, who knew postal 8s, wow.

The CJ8 was a rare Jeep when it was new, they are only getting rarer due to rust & carnage!

Where are you getting info of 50K production in the USA?

yep, today 20 plus thousand would not justify a quarter of a years production.

Part of the record keeping problem is that Jeep, in it's many forms and owners, has been one of the most mismanaged corporations ever. They have almost failed several times and have had lousy record keeping. Having had several off shore manufacturing factories such as in Brazil and Mexico, they have made numbers of variations and such an never imported the data to the USA. When they sold off the holdings they also sold the data. Sad, very Sad. I would suppose, such as with the 6, that the 27orso thousand cj8s is a US production number. I can not swear to that, but if record keeping is typical of early era owners runs true, then with the popularity of long wheelbase jeeps overseas, I would say they made quite a few either for export or in licensed factories abroad.
Just look at the Philippians Jeepneys, where did those come from?

I know Jeeps were made under license in India since WW2, the were also made under license in Venezuela, I have also seen Israeli CJ8 's & I have pictures of Jeeps being made in a blacksmiths shop BF Iraq, obviously a unlicensed manufacturer. All the printed info I've read used the 27K number though.

it is reported in several places that they made 50 and change CJ 6s for the US market
