I have an AMC20 with a Trac Lok. I am attempting to upgrade to one piece axle shafts. My attempts were thwarted by the Jeep gods. I can not seem to remove the axle shafts from the axle.

I have done everything that any write up, post, or YouTube video tells me to do... damn things don't wanna come out.

Is there anything different about removing the shafts from a Trac Lok that's not the same for an open diff?

A bigger slide hammer comes to mind and attach it to the axle itself. It has probably been in there a long time.

Are your problems with hubs or the axle itself? My hubs were very tight I used a large puller with a cheater left under tension. I left it this way for several hours and when it went it sounded like a gunshot. Be sure you put the nut back on or the hub will be airborne! I had no slide hammer so I put the hub back on and the brake drum backwards for a substitute. It will come off.:)

Have brake on backwards. I guess I just need to work on it. I hit the thing with a sledge hammer for a good 10 minutes, didnt move an inch.

I rebuilt an AMC20 with tracloc last summer but didn't have to put in half the effort you have so far; i used a slide hammer. Slide hammer works better than the brake drum trick and it sounds like you really need some extra muscle - go borrow a set from a local Autozone or Advance Auto and beat on it some more.

Thanks for this answer. I have been looking for confirmation that someone build a Trac Lok, and I just need more muscle. Don't want effort from now to be in vein. Wish me luck.

And I suggest you rebuild the Tracloc while you have the axleshafts pulled. Tracloc diffs are not known for their longetivity and freshening up the clutch pack should on your list of things to do. It's a fairly easy process, pull the diff from the axle housing, disassemble the spyder gears/clutch pack, swap in the new clutch pack, put it back together the way you took it apart, and throw it all back in to the axle housing. Would also be a good time to inspect the diff bearings and replace if worn/bad.

My plan is to go 100% while im in it. My only fear is breaking it down the the point that I can no longer put it back together (pinion angle). Right now im going to wire wheel it and paint it. Get the old shafts out and order new ones. I just may truss it while I'm at it.

Didn't think about pinion angle. Now would be a good time to reset your perches and get rid of those bolt on shims.
