Amc 20

Amc 20
I had forgotten about you getting that 8.8 awhile back. Took you long enough to force yourself into the upgrade. :)

I don't hammer on mine either, mostly slow rock crawls, But I did have
some pretty good wheel hop the second day. I don't know if that did it
or if it was because of it as wheel hop isn't usually a problem.

My cure is going to be a 8.8, and I will weld the tubes.:D

yea, I've been busy mowing grass and trying to work on the jeep at the same time. I did get the 4:10 gear and LS. diff. out of the housing I;m using and got the detroit out of the other bad housing so I can swap thing around after I take them to work to measure them.

Dug a little deeper into the 20 today. You know how we always tell people
to buy steel wedges. My springs came with alum. ones and here is what
has happened. The perches have wore into them at least 1/8" letting them
move till it finally twisted everything.

Glad to see you narrowed that down a little......Is that head on the center bolt starting to lean a little also? How were the U-Bolts?

..Is that head on the center bolt starting to lean a little also? How were the U-Bolts?

Yes it is leaning alittle.
Up untill the ride before I found this it has been tight, (I tightened it up just before I found the twisted tube after the last ride.)
I guess somehow it's been wearing but the u-bolts have stayed tight feeling.

Old Dog
Will at least your seeing all the things you need to do when you swap out the next axle.
Solid steel shims, I would also tack those to the spring hangers on the housing, maybe a gusset on those spring hangers so they can't bend up like your others, are those 1/2"or 5/8" u-bolts?
No matter what , the stress will just move somewhere else..........

one good thing, when we weld the perches on the 8.8 there will be no wedges. I guess I'll have to keep an eye on the perches though.

So do we blame the 20's weak perches and pressed in tubes that twist,
or do we blame the alum. wedges for wearing and letting the tube rock
under a load.
What do you all think ?

Just to let you know I've already ruled out the driver and/or the V8 :D

I had a similar issue but no casulties on my last outing, I was getting a tire rub that never existed before but while wheeling put it off that my springs were finally settling in but come to find my center bolts in my spring pack were petzeled with the locating heads sheared off and the U bolts loose with the STEEL wedges starting to walk out of place and all this allowing the axle to float around a bit.
Went to a larger diameter grade eight allen head bolt for my new spring pack center bolts and tightened the U bolts for all I was worth, we'll see.
I don't wheel as hard as you Old dog so I'm sticking with my 20 plus I have the full float kit and don't want to toss that set up, works to cool for flat towing.

Good eye Pete, I missed that!

Tarry, I'm sure your right about it all comming together to fail.gerg.webp

Maybe true but how many years of service did you get outta the old fella? Its not like you just put a bunch of street miles on that AMC20 .

Old Dog,

You are absolutely right, I know your stuff is good and you do pay attention to it but when you work it hard even through your careful it will get hurt............just the nature of the beast. Post some pictures on your upgrades!

Pete, thats true, it's held up for 6 years. I can't complain. I just wish it would have held together till winter when I was going to change it anyway.
I'm loosing wheeling time now.:( Our next club ride is june 9th, I'm hoping to get it together by then. The biggest thing is getting my welder buddy to take a break from everything he has to do and help me out.

I just looked at my maint. chart, the jeep has 13,000 miles on it. I know that over half of them are off road miles.

Your right I expect stuff to break, just wish it wasn't always at the worse times.:D
I'm going to be working on it at my buddys house who has the right tools for the job. I'll post some pics as I go.

Looking forward to it.
