Installed a auburn ected locker and ordered one piece axles. The axles only slide into the diff about 3/8 of an inch. The length from the bearings to the end of the shafts on the one piece is shorter than the length on the stock two piece. Any ideas.

Do you have a AMC20 wide track axel and ordered narrow track axels? Just my thought. Someone here will know for sure, but I thought they were wide track in the later 80's.

Re: AMC20 parts mismatch

do you mean the axles only slide into the side gears 3/8'? what do your splines measure, im guessing because you don't include that info ether its about I I/2'. you need to do a spline count.

your axles could be for who knows what

IF the spline engagement is only 3/8" with the axles seated. My SWAG is this-You are try'n to install narrow track axles in a wide track housing.
Compare with the axles you removed and there is a right and left side.

My axles are for a wide track. I can't go by axle length because two PC and one piece are measured in differant ways so I am measuring what I believe should be the same no matter what. End of the axles to the bearing. Do you all agree with that?

My two PC are a little over 1/2 inch longer from bearing to the end that goes into the diff. I had my bearings pressed twice and they are on all the way

Here's what I got from an older set of Superior axles I had.
23" and 26" with about an inch of engagement with a Detroit locker.

Wouldn't be the first time items were mis-boxed/labeled.
Call the maker and talk to their tech folks.

What brand axles? I just bought a used Ected and after I got it found out that "some" and Auburn can identify which ones, aftermarket one piece axles are too short for the Ected. I have Ten Factory axles and am hoping mine are not one of the "some". Anyone looking for a used Ected for numerically higher AMC20 R&P? $250
