Gotta quick question, the rear end is going out in my dads 79 cj with QuadraTrac and I can't find one to stick back in it, a local guy well known around here for cjs said that a standard (center differential) will work in it. Anybody got any experience in doing this at all. I was under the impression that it wouldn't but i know this guy and his experience and I want to believe him but id like some more opinions on it.

A TCase with an offset rear output and a axle with a centered diff. Yes, I know of a Jeep that is set up like that. You'd have steep driveline angles just sitting still. It's not the best setup but if you don't plan on putting much of a lift on it it can be done. I hope we are talking abut a CJ7 and not a 5.

Dave's right...
It might be able to be done, but NOT recommended. You should either stick with an AMC20 or go with a different Transfer Case . and thats a lot more money and adapter changes.

I have the same set up in a 79 CJ7 , GM Turbo 400 , Q-trac, AMC20 ....When i considered getting rid of the model 20, I was informed to change it all, or nothing...I opted to get one piece shafts for the model 20 and go with a 2x4 conversion for the Q-trac...

I think it is a mistake to go with a center-chunk rear end with the offset Q-trac output.

well false alarm, done a little more investigating this morning. ruled out the rear end by dropping the driveshafts and it still made the racket, its the Transfer Case . i appreciate the help fellas, but i guess a Transfer Case rebuild is in our future. i can do that, a rear axle rebuild is a little beyond my area of expertise, and tooling for that matter.

Good to hear.
I'm splitting my Q-trac today to put in new seals/gaskets.
Wish 4wd.com hadnt messed up the gasket set order TWICE... I could have it back together today.

Going stock chain or 2x4 conversion?

Edit: I see what you are saying. Bad TCase.
I rewrote my response because I didn't read yours.

EDIT #2: did you try putting the TCase in neutral to make sure it wasn't the tranny?

It doesn't have a nuetral being awd QuadraTrac . pulled the drain plug and stuck my finger in there when you turn the yoke you can feel a serious amount of slack in the chain, which makes us believe the chain is slipping. We'll just put a new chain in it, my dad doesn't want to spend the $600 it'll take to convert it, so new chain and its back on the road. Busa the tranny was recently rebuilt before he got it, and it also has had a crate motor dropped in too. He doesn't reallly do any offroading so it doesn't make sense, to do anything more to it than what came with. The po dropped quite a bit of $$$ on this old jeep, but like any other 30yr old vehicle it has a couple of issues.
