As subject states, looking for a low buck way to tighten up an AMC20 Trac-Loc while I have it apart for rebuild. Was actually disappointed when I took the axle apart - had already ordered and received a Lock-Right to install. After seeing the Trac-Loc, I ordered new clutch packs for it and was now wondering if I could increase the preload somehow?

Will keep the Lock-Right until I decide to swap gears...have another open diff case to swap into but just don't want to do it now.

Thanks for insights.

I don't ever recall hearing of any. Replace the clutch pak and add new friction modifier is about it.
Just a note worth mentioning, and you may know this. If your current gears happen to be 2.73's, you'll need a whole new carrier to go to any other ratio gears.

What was the thickness of the clutch pack and shim on each side?

.010 should tighten it up a bit.

x2... I would see if one of the old discs or plates could be left in to tighten it down. FWIW I hear they normally wear out in 10-20k miles..

I have HEARD that you can add a disc/ leave one of the old discs in (seems like it was a drag racer trick). I would think that by tightening it up it would just wear the clutches out quicker. Let us know what you do. I've got one in the shop I'm going to tear into if I can ever get all the ATV projects out of the way.

Thanks for the replies. Had thought about leaving one on the worn out clutch plates in the new pack. May be difficult to preload clutch pack enough to insert pinion gears but will try and report back.

I "beefed" up a 8.8 Ford LSD with shims. It chirps in a low speed tight turn.

Years ago I put a new Trac-lok in a Dana 44 . By noon on a trail ride it was junk.

I would not waste any money on new clutches but use it for your Lok-rite. :D

Good point and glad you brought that up. Unfortunately I DO have 2.73 gears in the other axle I have so I guess I'll just look for another diff case in my travels. In the meantime, will put the rebuilt Trc-loc back in. I have a Lock-right in the front already so traction will be improve over stock regardless.

Thanks again,
Ty

Worn Trac-loc clutch plates I have measure about .059" - a bit too thick to insert one in each of the new clutch packs. Will play around with it when I get the new parts and see where it goes.
