Bell housing for 258

So, you have the Transmission removed trom the bell housing. Why haven't you dropped the Transmission /Transfer Case out of the way? Yes, they ar ackward to work with. The Transfer Case hangs off to one side making the whole thing terrible to work with. With everything gone it's a piece of cake to get to the top bolts.

If you remove the Transmission /Transfer Case it would be easy enough to take it to a car wash and clean it up, possibly paint it too. A clean Transmission /Transfer Case is a lot easier to work with.

I had a difficult time getting shifters off and got intimidated when started reading about putting them back on. So just stopped where I was at. Thought I would be able to drop it without going that far because bottom of cab is cut out more than original by p/o, but that has shown to not be true either. So, my next step was going to be to try again to get them off and go from there. I unable to drop tranny completlely because (i dont know what its called "maybe output shaft") goes into the bell housing and wont go further back because the shifters. I havn't even looked at taking off Transfer Case because didn't want to take something apart and have more issues putting it all back. As you all can tell, this is my first time doing something like this so a but intimidated to do something that I can't fix or will end up costing more money.

You are right to stop.... Stop and think a bit ...... Stop randomly removing parts ....... try to stop being intimidated ......

The main stick isn't something to worry about, nothing is going to jump out and get lost. Your dealing with big sturdy simple parts. Put the Transmission back on the bell housing, a couple bolts will due. Remove the 6 or is it 8 bolts around the main stick. Tap the side of the Transmission top cover and it will pop right off as a solid unit, nothing to lose, nothing to break easily. Set it asside and cover the big gaping hole in the Transmission .

The 4 wheel drive stick is easy to remove, can't remember exactly. One bolt makes up the pivot, a couple small cotter pins and a couple pins. Easy, nothing to it, you can't screw up any sort of timing or anything delicate.

This is a case where taking off a few extra nuts and bolts will save you hours of work around time. If something is in the way, take a bunch of pictures, then remove it. This is 70 year old technology, made for farm boys and army guys to fix in the field.

Okay, that all sounds simple enough... Will work on that when i get home. :)

Yeah, the bell housing is now off and he can now move ahead with the project.

Yeah, you all helped a lot get this far. Now waiting to order new used one, then that's when I hear the real fun begins. Lol.

Hey Hedge, called Willy's they have a bh, but no springs hj. Still might take a trip down there and see what else I can find. Ill let you know, maybe meet and buy you a beer.

You'll need lots of little stuff like top gasket for the Transmission , a ball bearing for the fork, a bottom dust cover, the rubber boot for the fork. Possibly weld on perches, possibly schakles (2.5"). Willys (not Willy's, It would be pronounced Willis Works) is a fairly narrowly focused company they specialize in the original Universal jeep to the end of the CJ jeep era, he does have a few Wrangler parts, but not many. Make a list.

You've taught me well hedge. All of those are on my list. Founds some springs with shackles, bushings and perches guy parting out jeep this weekend. Found a rear seat out thst way too though.

You will need to make sure the shackle pivot on the frame are the right size for the springs now have.

i believe they are same. But good thinking. Will measure them before I go buy them. Dont want to get it all tore down to realize need to order new parts. Lol..

This is a fairly common upgrade so you are not plowing new ground. I.E. the parts are available and known.
