'80 CJ5. Chevy 350, T-176 and Dana 300 transfer
Hi all, and thanks for the add.

I have a 1980 CJ5 that was originally a 4 cylinder with an SR4 4 speed and Dana 300 Transfer. The person I had purchased it from had it in a SBC configuration still using the SR4 Transmission . The motor was shot, having dropped a couple cam lobes and then running it until the damn thing stopped, he sold it.

I am in the middle of putting it back together and have a new SBC to go back in, since it was already set up for it. However I am going with a T-176 4 speed with another Dana 300 .

My question is, the bell housing from the four cylinder is supposed to be a direct bolt up to the T-176 as that Transmission was an option. But...there are only the mounting holes for the SR4 which is different from the T-176 . What is the best way to make this combination work? There is plenty of space where the mounting holes could/might be drilled, but am a little hesitant to just dive in without hearing from others who might know a little more than I about what to do.

Strange that you only have the one set of holes, if you feel comfortable drilling it go for it, I have a dual pattern bell housing I can go take some measurements from if you need

That would be great. I was considering putting it flush on the Transmission and then marking the center where it needs drilled, then I have to ask, how much smaller of a hole would I need to allow for tapping of the threads?

The hole size depends on what bolt you will be using. I attached a Tap-Drill chart.

Check the back side of the bell housing for some cast in hole locations, these should match up with the T-176 mounting holes. The SR4 and T-176 share the same input splines and pilot bearing sizes.

I looked, if the casting marks are there, they're extremely light cause I didn't see them. The two transmissions are both 10 spline, but the 176 shaft is slightly larger diameter.

. Use center punches so the holes line up right

The OEM mounting bolt for the T-176 was 7/16X14 thd.
You want a "U" letter drill(.368 dia.)for this.

After getting off work, I went out and looked at the bell housing I have a bit closer. The casting numbers on it are 3251268 CF, which, according to Bing, is the one for the Iron Duke so I have the correct bell housing. :chug:

But there are no other casting marks, holes, dents, or any indication as to where the bolts for the 176 should be. So thanks to you all, I can see what I need to do next.

If I were you and needed to drill as it appears that you need to. I'd find the easiest hole to mark. Then put the bell housing onto make sure the mark lines up with the Transmission hole. If it does I'd drill and tap that one, then install the bell housing tightening up the one bolt. Not real tight just enough to hold the bell house solidly to the Transmission . Then if it is possible very accurately mark the holes using the actual Transmission . A big drill that just fits in the Transmission . casting would work well if turned enough to just make a center mark in the aluminum. Then remove the housing, find the best way to drill a straight hold of the correct size, drill and tap. The Transmission would be guaranteed to fit. You have to hope the existing holes won't interfere with the new ones. If they do have the holes welded closed and proceed.

From the looks of the casting inside the bell housing it appears there are reinforced areas waiting to be drilled and tapped.

Sweet you Transmission input will center it up to the bell housing
