Wiring Can anyone help me identify this cj7 switch

That is one weird looking electric component. It looks like some sort of rheostat maybe left over from an old trailer brake system.
Can you somewhat follow the wires and give us some idea of where they go? Are any of the wires hot?

I never would have guessed that because I have never worked one one with the auto trans. Hmm, I bet @007 knows though... :chug:
What I am wondering is why it's not being used on your CJ @Virginia-cj7 .

The OP has a 400 tranny (Q-Trac swapped out). I'm assuming it's an early 400 with kick down switch located next to the carb. Later 400s are located near the accelerator pedal.

So if the accelerator pedal is pushed far enough, the top part of the pedal comes back and hits that switch to do the kickdown. Interesting. Learned something new as I too have never worked on a CJ with the Q-trac tranny. Thanks for the lesson.

The 400/Q-Trac Trans/T-case. There is a detend solenoid mounted on the valve body and is activated by the detent switch (kick-down switch). The switch is operated by the accelerator pedal. When the pedal is moved to full throttle the switch contacts close completing the circuit to the solenoid. This reroutes pressure into the intermediate clutch and downshifts the tranny to second gear. I hope this helps.
