Carb Identification

Good day all, I hate to start my membership here which such a silly question but here I am...

recently bought and have started working on a '77 CJ5 , always loved them, had newer jeeps in the past but figured it was time to finally get one. Things are going okay but I cannot for the life of me identify this carb...

I have scoured the internet Carter carbs, multiple numbers but to no avail. the two numbers I have found stamped on it do not seem to be valid, and most pictures I find to not seem to match up, any help would be appreciated, love the site and have already referenced it a few times for other issues.

Welcome aboard from Texas that’s definitely a Carter BBD it’s a non feed back and has an electric choke on it but i couldn’t tell what any of the numbers mean

thank you for the reply, that at least is a start. I can't seem to get those numbers to line up with anything at all.

The previous owner have a few lines coming off the carb that are just cut and blocked, it does run like this but does not idle well, I would love to find some literature on this one in particular so I can learn/rebuild it. So the search continues.

Your tag is missing from the carb.
The Jeep parts manual shows a Carter BBD with a tag/ID number of: BBD-8107S for 1977/1978.

However, that carb was used on full size Jeep models, not CJ's, for the years 1977/1978.

Maybe there has been some switcheroo going on.....

Anyways, see if the number I listed helps.

BBD didn't appear on CJ models till 1979/1980.

If you go to Rockauto and look up '80 CJ5 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l it shows that same carb.

Just finished putting a starter in my chevy cruze and checked Rockauto, definitely the same carb. Thank you so much, I was starting to think it wasn't the original carb.

So one more question.... is this carb okay to keep using or should I find the original?

That carb is just fine for you. You just need to get it hooked up right. For starters the big hose on top is the vent for the bowel and should not be plugged the smaller vent that is plugged should go to your dissy. Does it have a vac line hooked to it and where is coming from?

Also there are two vacuum lines one from what looks like it's coming from the base of the carb right over to a diaphragm that's hooked to the choke which I assume works in conjunction with that electric choke.

Second line looks like some sort of timing adjustment going from the carb to the distributor.

The choke solenoid had no wire to it at all. And there also appears to be another solenoid on the throttle linkage looks like it advances the throttle when actuated but also not wired to anything.

Dissy is short for distributor sorry. I don't remember ever seeing a vac line going to the choke it should have a 12 volt wire going to it that heats up the spring inside the round plastic black piece. The vac line to your distributor should be hooked to the port on the side by the bowl vents.

Ah yes okay. The two lines shown in my last post as seen one going right up to the choke, and the other one goes over to the distributor. Seems from what I have read the choke is vaccume and electric.

I was able to print the service manual today, pulled the carb after dinner tonight. As soon as I get the little guy down to bed I'm going to grab that manual and some cleaner and see what kind of damage I can do. If this carb is fine for my jeep is it worth ordering a rebuild kit? Or just cleaning it?

Put a rebuilt kit in it. A lot of people don't think about the float but I like to replace it with a rebuild because they can get saturated and no longer float like it should.

Carter has been out of business since 1985 RIP. Edelbrock has been producing their AFB and AVS 4 barrels for many years

Parts place up town found a rebuild kit and new float in there wearhouse in Toronto. Will be here tomorrow morning. Thank you all again for all the help. Can't wait to rebuild and fire it up this weekend.

Done and done, took a few hours and did the rebuild this afternoon. Then right after the install noticed a spring in my cleaning tray.... second rebuild went pretty quick, second install was pretty good too. Jeep fired right up, idles a bit fast but runs so much better. Gas pedal is so much more responsive. I'm so happy with the results.

Attached a pic of how dirty the tray was after I was done. Could not believe how much sand and dirt was in the float bowl...

Now onto the parking brake situation. That may need a new thread. The PO removed all cables, brackets and even the pedal, found a pedal now just need to get the cables and mounting hardware.

Great to hear, the parking brake system is pretty simple and you already found the hard to find part the rest of it is simple and for sale online


As far as for it idling high have you adjusted your idle mixture screws and idle screw?

So I definitely made the rookie mistake of not noting my idle mixture screws position before removing them... that being said the PO likely didn't have them set right anyway since it could barely stay running at an idle. I seated them and backed them off the recommended 1.5 turns, haven't played with it much since. I don't have the dash in so no tach at the moment. But she seemed to idle high. It's still night and day compared to before.

I want to tackle this parking brake issue and get all the information I need off the jeep so I can shop online tonight. I'm assuming I'll need axle type and size, brake diameter?
