Here's the deal, my 86 will shut off, if you have to suddenly get on the brakes, like a light changes or such. So, has anyone encountered this before and is there a fix? Should I just do the MC2100 carb swap? If carb swap is the answer then has anyone dealt with this ebay dealer, ehrmannmp ? When reading his write up, he seems to be knowledgeable, but I'm not drinking all the kool aid yet.

Yes, I have the Carter unit.

On the idea of swapping, what would I be up against? I'm registered with antique plates and emissions are out the window. Do I need adaptor plates or .....? Anyone got any links they can share?

Yeah, that's who I got my MC2150 from. See my build site for the install. It came set up pretty well, jets for my altitude and took very little adjusting after install to get it running very smooth. I am in a rush right now, but will post more on it to you later. Oh, one last thing, my Carter was doing the same thing...stalling at lights and stop signs.

A good carb rebuild should fix most of your Carter carb problems. The Carter does have kind of a bad reputation though, I personally haven't had to deal with one though.

I have no issue with the eBay guy, he has a good racket going for him, if it were me, you can source everything that he's going to sell you. I have heard that the small 2 barrel to large 2 barrel adapter he includes in his kit does not like to create a good seal.

When I'm not on my phone I can get you the part numbers for everything you need from Summit Racing, if you're interested, and then all you have to do is source a MC2100 carb, which you can get from a surprising amount of places.

Elwood is right, but I took the lazy route. He is also right about the seal. After seeing the two paper thin gaskets that came with it, I went to Napa and got a proper gasket. ( see pic) no leaks and if you decide to go this route, I have the part number for this gasket.

Project86, when the engine stalls during a brake application, the brake vacumn booster should have a leak and the engine is loosing vacumn. This can be checked by blocking off the booster hose and applying brakes while engine is running, as then it should not stall.

"alpha6" has done a great job and you can swap like him, I mean upgrade. But I have used Carter for about 15 years, without any problem!
I think you have some problems with your vacuuming. Is there any new /foos/ sounds? look at "alpha6"'s photo, and the plug near the carburetor on the tee, does your's have it?

Thanks for all the good info. I'm gonna put off the carb project until next week, since this weekend is booked already. But I will make some time to look under the hood Saturday afternoon. I'll have to make a decision sooner or later. Thanks again.

Well I got good news and bad news. The good news is I did the carb swap Saturday and OMG did it ever make a difference. I was looking for a cigerette and a towel after the first test drive. The bad news is I don't have any pictures yet. But I will. I ended up using the WK 551 kit from weberdirect. The kit came with practically everything and a good set of instructions. If you elect to use this carb, you'll need to get a fuel pressure regulator. I got the Mr. Gasket brand at O'Rielly's; it comes with several sized nipples to choose from to fit up to your fuel hose size. We put the air filter cover on and after a little coaxing on the fuel it fired right up. A quick idle adjustment and it was off to the C-store for some fuel and a Dr. Pepper. I tried a couple of quick hard stops to try to stall it, but it worked as advertised. I feel like the throttle return spring may off just a little, but it could be because I was accustomed to the old one for so long. I might do just a tiny bit of tweaking to it, but for right now I'm sold on this unit.
