My 82 has the dreaded Carter BBD. My 81 has a non module control Carter. I'm ordering a new one for my 81 and have a spare for a core deposit. That means I still have the original one left over from the 81. If I get rid of the module and wiring harness can I replace the BBD with the older version? I know it fits and I'd rebuild it first.

Pete, you are talking about getting rid of the computer, right? located behind the glove box, along with its related sensors and wires, and not the ignition control module.
Edit: Come to think of it, this should also require doing the Nutter bypass.

Yeah all the wiring and the computer. If I'm thinking correctly it won't technically need the bypass.

You need to do the by-pass so the dissy works right.

What issue(s) are you hav'n with the BBD version that you don't think can happen with the other?
The biggest deal is the idle tube blockage that can 'muck' up both of'em.

I'm removing the whole computer. I will have to connect the wires that go from the module on the fender to the distributor so technically I am doing the bypass I guess but I'm going the extra mile and removing it completely.

I want to get rid of the "computer " all together. No need for it and it'll help clean up the engine compartment. I know all to well about the idle tubes but didn't think of drilling them out. Thanks for the link. Now I have to see if I have the correct drill bit

Wish I could-Still have to play the SMOG game here in PRK.
That site has lots of good info.
Drill'd mine out years ago. No issue since. Doesn't seem to affect SMOG either.

Good to know. Here the rule is we're supposed to have everything that came from the factory as far as emissions but it doesn't have to work. mine is a '82 which is a "loophole" year. So many things changed during the year my mechanic will pretty much let anything go.

My concern would be-What if you 'lose' your current mechanic, and gotta find somedangbody new??
Will this new mechanic be as 'forgiving', as your current guy is?

The beauty of it being an 82 is I can still get away with a lot of 81 stuff when I explain it to most places. ;) I do believe I've made my mechanic more Jeep friendly though. :chug:

Great news !
