CJ 258 runs good then immediately dies...
Is the ignition control module part of the emissions system? I only ask because I have a 1980 CJ7 Renegade and my ICM was (and remains) MIA when I took the title, as well as the smog pump, the carter carb and I forget what else came from the factory and is now probably in some land fill.

Not sure you can run without the ICM unless your using a points type dizzy. :confused:

I don't know either. It's an HEI distributor. I know that much. I guess I take a lot on faith.

read 2 pages so far but just for giggles see if this is loose on the carb.
My 86 had similar issues but would die an acceleration. Idle was fine.
And a spark tester would'nt hurt.
As a locksmith i also would ask if the column mounted ignition switch was maybe corroded or loose

HEI info-READ IT!
My research indicates you can run an HEI w/o the Jeep's ICM.
HEI isn't all it's crack'd up to be------

Thanks for the info. The Jeep came with it. It wasn't my "upgrade," I just inherited it. I'm not sure which PO installed it, but since it's running fine, never left me stranded, I'm not inclined to change things. If any of the issues cited in the above info presents, I'll recognize it and change my ignition system.
