Hey all,

My first post and first time working on a CJ. I'm a chevy guy and have worked on small block and big blocks all my life.

Friends CJ we replaced cap, rotor, plugs, and wires. Carb looks new but don't know the history. Timed it tonight to 10 degrees per diagram I got off the net. It will start up ok, idle ok, but when you try to give it any throttle it falls on it's face and back fires out of the exhaust. I'm stumped.....

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,

That initial timing might be a bit steep, how about a bit slower on the throttle next time. I would still want to determine weather it is caused by not enough accelerator pump from the carb or timing too far advanced.

WELCOME :chug:
Have you ck'd for vacuum leaks?
IMO-To much timing.

With engine off look down the carb and turn the throttle shaft, you should see fuel spray. If not, you've found a problem.

Simple but important question. Did it run well right before doing the work?

I also have a question, what is a CJ7 "342"?

also, what kind of ignition? stock, hei, etc.;
Is vacuum advance hooked up?;
What carb - bbd, 2150 motorcraft, weber, etc.?
10 degrees timing w/o vac. advance? what is timing with vac advance connected?
Any chance balancer has slipped and timing mark is incorrect?

That's a big ol' 6 cylinder!

I agree with many of the others:
1) Need more info and
2) If she was running OK prior to the parts install, something new is probably outta whack.
3) Serious vacuum leak
4) Timing
