CJ7 Dana 44

CJ7 Dana 44
It depends what year AMC you have. My rear brakes on my 76 are 11". I put on a dual diaphragm booster / vette MC setup and can lock all 4 with 33's easy. I can't imagine not being able to do the same with 36's.

WW-Do you know what size brakes were used on the '86 CJ7 44's?

WOW:eek: Didn't think a rear '44' ever had brakes that small.

It looked like you could use the same drum on both. But it was the end of a run and I think they were just getting rid of everthing before the change over to the Wrangler.

With the really big tires I imagine slamming on the brakes in an emergency stop and your CJ turning into a tumbling ball going down the road. But keep in mind, I'm 57. I've skidded down the road more than once, so I simply can't ignore my little safety demon.

Lmao I don't think my brakes work that great but Incase they do.. I'm going to try and stay with a lower center of gravity so hopefully it won't be too bad. Currently the jeep has about 6.25" of lift but I'm going to go back down to around 4-5ish after I decide on fenders.

Doesn't that 44 have larger brakes than the 20 did?

I will compare the brake sizes when I have the axles side by side next week. So far I haven't had any issues stopping with the 36's. It seems my issues are just getting it to move.

If stopping is an issue then I will be adding disk brakes. I have looked at the conversion kits and it's definitely an option that I'm considering.

The one I had was the same size as the AMC20

That's not what I wanted to hear!! I will definitely compare them next week. Worst case we will either upgrade the booster and/or switch to disk brakes.

My families safety along with others on the road is nothing to take lightly.

Taken-Do you have disc on the front and power brakes now?
You will like the 4:88-I run 33's w/4:88's and don't even use first gear on the street.
No issue on the freeway either.

Yes disks and power brakes. I'm considering doing the TSM disk brake conversion on the rear. I cleaned up the rust inside the drums on the Dana 44 . Hopefully they will be enough for now.

I think y'all will get a kick out of the Dana 44 's prior owners sorry excuse for welding. I'll be starting a build thread after this weekend.
