CJ7 transmission swap

I have an 81 CJ7 with the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l engine, a T-4 Transmission and a wanna 300 Transfer Case . the transmission and transfer case both gave out and I'm wanting to put a 5 speed transmission in it. any suggestions? i use it for ranch work, trails and on the highway

The T-4 is among the worst transmissions to go into a CJ. The only 5 speed to go into a CJ was the T-5 . It's just as bad as the T4 but as a 5th gear. It would be the easiest swap but I wouldn't do it.
When I was in your shoes I put in a Ford T-18 Transmission but that's a 4 speed (a very heavy duty 4 speed). It bolted right up to the bellhousing after drilling 4 holes. I adapted the T18 to mate to my Dana 300 (I had a '82 CJ7 at the time)
Are you sure you also need a new TCase? If so you could get a tranny and TCase as a matched set. Just make sure the TCase output is on the passenger side.

Ditto with what BusaDave said. How did the 300 Transfer Case give out? Short of running it without gear oil in it, they're hard to kill.

thanks. the front and rear seal gave out when i was on the highway and left a trail of fluid and it burned up.

While not a direct bolt up a AX-15 can be easily swapped in. is a medium duty Transmission , and is a 5 speed..
