Clutch fan or electric?

Clutch fan or electric?
As for me, I had other things intrude, namely a leaky rear main seal that I have yet to attend to and having just purchased my first house, getting it ready for winter.
My plan is to use the relays I scored from the Merc Mystique I got the fans out of and using them along with a second adustable temperture probe going to have low speed come on at one setting and both come on at high speed at higher tempuratures. If you're in need of some diagrams I have some I can post.

You KNEW I was gonna ask you to post them, so why make me ask?
Just wanna make me feel dumb, huh? Just kidding..!! Yes, I'd love to see them.
Maybe if you could draw them in crayon, I'd understand them !! LOL

:p I was scanning email and your post and you almost got me going. Lately I've been getting some flack from online home repair forum prima donnas.

I'm planning on using elements of the following diagrams but primarily this'll be the one I'm using, I got this from another forum by their leave.

If one has the older rectifier Ford fan this may apply as well;

...and this one has the rectifier that mine has from that '99 Merc Mystique. I got real lucky as I found that fan already pulled and sitting in the trunk. I hope I didn't raid someone's cache.

I hope these help I belong to three or four other Jeep forums that have detailed write ups about this by folks more knowledgeable than myself. I'm not sure how kindly this forum would take to posting links to other forums so if you'd like these links I may have to send them by private message.

Just got back home from Jeeptoberfest about 80 miles away.
Got off the highway to find a horrible shudder coming from engine bay.
One of the two flex a lite fans had only 1 blade left on it, and was shaking horribly.

Since I wired them independantly, I only needed to pull one fuse, mounted right on the fender well. Shudder went away. Simple enough. Ran the rest of the way on 1 fan.

I wired them that way just in case something like this would happen. However, it bothers me that the fan blades came apart at all.

I have used the Flex-a-Lite FLX-575 on a few Jeep projects and have good luck with them.. Little loud but keeps them cool in south Texas heat :chug:

Thats what I'm using. (blades just came off one fan yesterday) What do you think about the durability?

It almost makes me want to go the Ford Contour route. At least then I wouldnt think the blades would come off...

Did you buy the fans used? You may have got a bad one.

I had a stick get shoved into one of the fans while crossing a creek and it sounded like hell.. Shut the fans off and pulled it out and never gave me a problem.. Could not even begin to tell you why you chunked a blade :(

I am running flexalite's S blade single puller for my V8. Two years ago we had a blistering hot summer in Texas, as hot as the Middle East, and my Jeep stayed around 190-200 with my BeCool radiator.

I believe the fan has around 2800 CFM's; that's why I chose it. I am very pleased with it, and will see how it does with my next swap, auto tranny and radiator w/ Transmission cooler.

Before, I had the dual fan flexalite, but one day one fan somehow chewed into my radiator. Luckily I pulled over, disconnected it, and kept the other one on.

I'm moving the dual setup (after I make repairs) to my other CJ with the 4.0L. Should do fine there if it can stop from flexing and eating itself. I think it pulls 2300 CFMS's.

Bottom line, if you got the amperage, go with electric, IMO. Free up HP, faster hotter heater, and versatility. But, make sure you get a quality setup, like flexalite.

Electromagnetic , the best of both worlds . If they only made them small enough.
