Hey guys now that I am getting the CJ rolling a bit I see the rear seal on the Transfer Case is leaking pretty good. There is a ring of oil on the bottom of the tub in line with the output shaft.

So questions are how big a job is it to replace and what else should I do while I in there? Don't know how old the u-joints are but they don't look bad, should I replace them while I have it down?

I'm not positive on the 18, but on the 20, when i replaced the rear output to mate with the CV style drive shaft, I had to take the drive line off, and remove a large nut holding the output "yoke" on. With that was the seal I believe...

I think the 18 is not much different, but not positive...

Thanks JR, I think the meat of it similar, drop the drive shaft, then 4 bolts hold on the yoke assembly (or so it looks). Just didn't want to pull those bolts and the guts of it puke out on the garage floor because I didn't know any better.

Also, with it open, and drained is there any other thing I should do to the Transfer Case .

If it isn't making a lot of noise. I would just replace the seal. Make sure you put sealant on the splines of the yoke.

Do you have the parking brake drum on there?

So haven't done it yet but looks like you drop the drive shaft and there is a large nut to remove the yoke (where u joint connects) , then 4 bolts hold on the rear yoke assembly.

If you have the parking drum brake style then once you remove the four nuts and the drive shaft you should have a large nut inside the yoke. remove the nut and the yoke should pull off. If you do have the style with the drum parking brake you can remove the drum and then the backing plate this will give you acess to the speedometer housing and the oil seal is in their.

Sealant on the splines? Not sure what you mean there. What kind of sealant?

The yoke and the output shaft are obviously splined so they mate you are suppose to but something on the shaft when it goes back together?

Ok, got it all pulled apart and cleaned up. I found two shims under the speedometer gear housing, which I had to remove to get the old seal out. An it didn't want to give up.

Some of the edges of parts look like the saw the business end of a BFH but he surfaces look good. I can't tell about the seal as it was destroyed on removal.

Speedo gear has a flat spot on the end that goes in the housing first so I will need a new one.

So new seal new felt and ready to go back. I don't see where there was any RTV or anything even a gasket on the housing to Transfer Case just the shims. Not sure if there should be. It is hard to tell if it is leaking else where.

Anything else j should do on reassembly?
