1974 CJ5 ~ Fresh built AMC 360 - SM420 - D20 - D30F with upgraded 30 spline shafts and knuckles & D44R - 4.27 Gears - ARB Lockers F/R - All chrome molly axles - on 33's - YJ 4" Lift Spring Conversion
So I rebuilt the Dana 20 last weekend, and I'm a little confused on this. The plastic "gear" in the below photo is pretty free (not much resistance) to spin independently from the metal "ring" it is around, but that ring also seems to spin freely around the shaft itself too.

Am I missing something or is this not right? Does it work from cyntrifical (spelling??) force, and hold while in motion but is free otherwise to not bind or "rewind" the gauge / odometer?

Or it my fear correct and this is "broken"?

It should be replaced.
The nylon-over-metal sleeve models usually started to slip after driving a short distance and getting warmed up.
Find an all metal drive gear.
Keep in mind it still has to be matched to your driven gear.
I suppose you could clean the other one up really well and mayb glue it or JB it to the sleeve.
I'm sure that's been tried before......

I agree and try to find a metal gear. If I remember right when everything is bolted together on the shaft, the gear is clamped tight. But if as you said the plastic gear spins on the collar it is time for a new one.

Thanks guys... kinda what i was afraid of... already sealed back in with new bearings and races...

Folks have had good lock putting red loctite between the plastic gear and metal sleeve if they start slipping. Just make sure you get all traces of oil off the parts first.

Supposedly aftermarket gears are often just as loose out of the box.
