The only real gripe I have about my on line purchace of the '81 Cj Laredo I have is the diffs both leak from the yokes. The front Dana 30 is the worst but the rear leaks as well. I have yet to tear into an axle in this manner. Is this a fairly easy fix that doesnt require specialty tools? Im changing out the fluids in both tomorrow with non synthetic 80W-90 and was hoping I could get these leaks stopped while Im at it.

The only special tool you need is an inch lb. torque wrench. You need to check how much torque is required to turn the yoke (with the jeep jacked up and the tires off) before you change the seal and than retighten the yoke nut to achieve the same torque.
 
Ok I may have to find something else to do this weekend then. I'll have to pick up an in lb. torque wrench and most likely order the seals like I had to for the diff covers.
 
there is not a crush sleeve in a Dana 30 differential. that pinion nut needs to be tightened to the factory specification. the pinion bearing preload is set when differential is setup. Please refer to a fsm or motor manual for proper procedure to replace pinion seal. mike
 
I think these guys have nailed it for you Pete. I would recommend a National or SKF brand seal. Don't get a cheap Crown or Omix-ada brand. This is something you only want to do once, so get the good ones.

Yep, that 81 Dana 30 doesn't have a crush sleve, the inch pound torque wrench is used when you put the pinion bearings in and adjust the preload with the race shims. Since that has already been set all you have to do is retorque the pinion nut back to factory specs.
 
2x4 with a hole in its a good tool to have to pop that seal in
 
They are right on the 30 but you need to reset the rear 20 with the torque wrench. The 30 also has a setting when the bearings are installed
as mentioned but it should end up somewhere close to that after the seal is installed.
I would also buy new pinion yoke nuts as they are locking nuts and should not be reused. I know a lot of people do, but I wouldn't.
 
when you do this check for a groove in the yoke where the seal rides if there is get a seal with a seal rider which is a sleeve that fits over the yoke to make the yoke new again they press on with a tool that comes in the kit will usually stopthe leak.

I got started a little today but it wasnt long till life ( kids ) interupted. I bairly got the diff cover off and fluid drained but I did have enough time to snap a quick pic. Looks like 4.11 gears? The last numbers ar 41 11
