Hello. I have a 84 CJ7 Renegade with AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , T-4 , 300 Transfer Case and stock axles. Not sure of type. The jeep is none stock with 45000 original miles on it. I want to change al the fluids except motor oil. I have been reading a bit on here but still cant narrow it down. Some say stick with atf in Transmission and some say gear oil. Also am towing it about 120 miles. Last time I dropped rear shaft but done remember it I locked hubs or had tf in neutral or Transmission in gear. Thanks for the advice in advance.

The use of ATF in the late model CJs was a big screw up by AMC. For the tranny and Transfer Case use SAE 85-90 wt gear oil. For flat towing, the tow bar set-up will work, I would advise dual chains also. The owners manual states for manual Transmission is to have the hubs locked, Transfer Case in neutral, tranny in gear, steering wheel unlocked. Then every 200 miles to run the engine for one minute to lubricate the Transfer Case . Or drop the rear driveshaft. After flat towing for a while you can feel just how warm the Transfer Case gets as it is poorly lubricated during flat towing. A good front wheel alignment helps and have the tow bar mounted level or down a bit on the tow ball end. Don't slam on your brakes either as the forward momentum can break the hold down mechanism on the tow bar. You are towing a vehicle weighing around 4,000 lbs with no trailer brakes.
Edit: Looking at your pics, it does appear that you have locking hubs in the rear. So you could just unlock those suckers and flat tow all day long.

I wish they locked. Just hubs. Do you need to lock front hubs if you drop driveshaft? That is my main concern.

When I first got my 8 it had some kind of heavier gear oil in the T-5 . It regularly ground the 3-4 shift unless I gave it an extra second or two between shifts. It was also hard to get into gear when cold. After reading a ton of differing opinions (all of which have merit because it worked for them) I chose Synchromesh. No more grinding, regardless of how fast I shifted, it was easier to get into any gear (hot or cold) at any time. Cant say enough good about the stuff, and it greatly improved the driveablity up until I pulled it for a T19. IIRC 85/90 GL4 for the Transfer Case

In the T-4 /T-5 use 75W-90 syn gear oil(I use Valvoline in mine).
AMC used ATF, against Borg-Warner's advice and burned up many T-4 /T-5 trannys. BW would not warranty them, and AMC had to 'eat' those losses.
AMC had a special 'stink-oil' for the T-4 /&5 that hasn't been made in 20 yrs. I still have a case of it.
Do you have an LSD in the rear diff?
Otherwise, just std weight gear oil.

I drop the rear DS at the pinion, and no hub locking is needed.
Just remember to unlock the steering wheel.;)

Here is a great thread and illustration on towing a CJ. The post is about a Dana 20 Transfer Case but the same applies to a Dana 300 .
