Searched, and found the question in old posts, but no definitive answer. Im hoping a new post will get answers. I am thinking of putting a detroit locker (auto, not true trac) in the front but I dont want the steering nightmares i have read about. I have heard that unlocking my hubs will make the locker un-noticable on the road, but what about on the trail? i want to be able to lock the hubs and engage front axle as needed with twin stick. Now the question... will the locker affect steering with hubs locked but front axle in N?
Sorry that was so long-winded:o

You will still feel it, but it won't be near as bad as if you left it engaged. Your steering will be a little heavy, but not much. ( or at least that's how mine feels.

I have gone wheeling with guys at Moab who have full time lockers and they really have a tough time on the slickrock where they do have to get out and disengage the front hubs. It can also be a bear shifting in and out with the twin stick on the Dana 300 . If you plan to go that route, I would suggest playing with the twin stick and see how you like it before installing that locker. Moab slickrock is going to the extreme though.

did you do a full split on the Dana 300 ?

The Detroit claims it only locks up when power is applied.(that's how my rear works) So with that in mind, you shouldn't know it's there if your in rear wheel drive.
I have no personal experience though, and we all know that things don't always work as planed.:D

Under power it locks in and it likes push straight in a corner but power steering makes things better.

Unlocked on tar roads I cannot notice it. (Front)

On icy roads I unlock a rear hub so the rear don't try to come around. It happens real fast!

But on the trail they just work great

DL's only lock under powder.
I run'em front and rear. Hubs locked in 2WD is NO issue. Why would you think it would be??
DL's drive from the inside wheel under power in a turn.

Twin stick yes... do not plan on removing the "pills" as I believe they are called

Everything is in disassembled state right now.. just trying to get details before money is spent on this part.
Im going with OX in rear, but undecided on front due to "possible" steering issues. Ive never driven anything with a front locker, so Im a rookie on that area. I like the reviews and comments on the Truetrac, but was checking to see if a true locker was an option.

I guess my real question would be..."Is steering affected with hubs locked and twin stick in N, and is it a problem on trails"

T'case in "N"-You ain't move'n anyhoo;)
Like I said-I run a front D/L and NO-No issue with hubs locked in 2WD w/steering.

I really love having a selectable in the front. I got my Eaton Elocker put in a couple years ago and will never use anything but a selectable of some sort again. Running with the hubs locked and front engaged gives you 3 wheel drive that you can steer (and get you though a lot). When you really need 4 wheel drive just hit a switch.
Going to change out my DL rear to something else one of these days.

the front stick will always be N/ only in 4x4 will you get too use the front stick. i dont see how you think the front stick will affect the locker? with the pills in you dont have a full split. you'll feel the locker when the hubs are engaged i never feel my quik loc unless im in 4x4 and then i need to put power to it in reverse then forward and its engaged. might be broken but thats how i work the locker but once my hubs are free i feel nothing really. i also never drove with the old carrier. with that said i might think the quirks of my locker are normal??? i find myself in 2wr low alot on the trail so again more time with out my locker.

medic how do you think the twin stick is going to work for you? without the pills removed? you might have a misunderstanding about the twin stick or im reading this all wrong.

Its almost always me Dan77: So please correct me if Im wrong. Hubs Locked but Front stick in N would mean front driveshaft not turning, so basically 2WD. (Its at THIS point I was asking if steering would be affected by locker). Move front stick to L, and now 4wd completely locked. Am i thinking right?
Sorry guys and girls, lockers are COMPLETELY new to me ( heh, so are Jeeps)
but Im enjoying myself so far.
The reason I brought this up at all was because I want my little lady to 4wheel this with me also, and I dont know if she could handle very stiff steering, cause she is definately my "Little" lady.
Thanks

You have PS, 'rite'?

:D no worries man.

so with the twin stick you have the front in N and the rear in 2RHI you can go to 2RLO at any time, at a stop Transmission in N !!!:D when you want to use 4x4 you set the front stick and rear stick together. only a full spilt will get independent front drive. shift pill removal and some sort of spring kit from novak will get full front/rear independence....

ur little lady will learn how to drive with a locker its no big deal. check ur steering damper. and keep her thumbs outta the way.... she'll be fine, its the breaks and good running carb/FI you need to worry about:chug:

If you have the hubs locked then the axels will be turning and the locker will be working the same whether in 2WD or 4WD it works off the axels not the drive shaft. I hope this helps answer your ?

Lumpy... yes to PS

Thanks everyone.. Cleared everything up. Much better understanding and less worries now. I appreciate the replies.:D

DL's engage/disengage via load from DS. Not the other way around.
That's what the 'dog' ratchets are there for inside the carrier.

I stand corrected.

But I have to say, this was a really good question. A locker has to be driven by the driveshaft and NOT the axles to lock. That is good to know.

911 Medic-I have a set of Novak twinsticks if you are in the market. They are in the Classified section this forum, or, you can send me a PM and I will contact you. They are for a Dana 20 ...
