fun weekend working on the 66 cj5
Thorwon
Active Jeeper
Well she has a new rear axle, and disk brakes up front.
I started working on the axle and everything went great, no problems at all.
So I thought ok that was easy enough I'll just keep going. So I started on the disk brakes. It seemed like nothing went right. Starting with trying to get the brake lines fittings to come loose. I knew I would have to replace at least 1 line but I had to replace 3. I had to use vise grips to get the lines loose.
When I went to install the rotor on the drivers side, the back of the hub was not machined flat so the rotor didn't fit. Well the hub is to big for my lathe.( craftsmen 6x18 )
I clamped it down on the mill (jet J15 ). I put a 3/4" carbide end mill in and started cutting. It took 2 hours to finish.
I started installing the calipers and found the banjo bolts were wrong. They were metric. I decided to just make them. It took about 10 minutes per bolt.
The wife came out and helped me bleed them. Today was the first time I have driven this jeep with working brakes.
All in all it was a great day.
