gas tank question

1985 CJ7 with a poly gas tank not sure if 15 or 20 gallon. I noticed the other day it had gas dripping from the skid plate, so I dropped the tank today and it looks like gas is leaking around the hose connections on top of the tank. My tank has two plastic 90 deg elbows that come out of the top for line there they y into each other. these 90 degree elbow have a rubber gasket they sit on top of well they look old because i can spin the elbow around and it's loose. Can i replace these? if where do i get them and what are they called?

The oem poly tanks for the '85 were 20 gal. The two elbows you are referring to should be the rollover check valves. The gaskets for them might even be available at a local auto parts. You can also try one of the big box 4wd outfits like Morris, Quadratec, or 4wd hardware. I have the Chilton Jeep Repair Manual '45-'87 and see that tank plus the hardware attached in it. When I bought that manual there was an application for a wiring schematic for my year CJ and I am sure glad I got that.

I thought it looked alot bigger than a 15 gal tank, and you are correct they are rollover check valves. I popped the leaking one out and you can hear the check valve inside. the rubber grommet is dry rotted and does not make a tight seal. Do you know where to find a new skid plate that cradles the tank like the factory one does?

In my opinion, the Kilby Enterprises has a bulletproof 20 gal. one. The price probably reflects that also. You might check with the 4wd outfits that I had previously mentioned.
