Gear ratios and What the heck are these brakes?

Hey all, I am very new to CJ5 's and Jeeps in general, but I bought my first one last week and now just trying to figure out what I have gotten myself into...here's what I'm doin...with my 1974 CJ5

It looks like there has been an axle swap in the front or a disc brake conversion it looks like the front diff is a Dana 30 with a 3.07 ratio (43 14) which is probably why the rear end is blown in the Dana 44 with the 3.73 (41-11) I was hoping for some insight on what are the best ratio to put in I'm on 33" tires and not sure of the lift, I was thinking 4.11 with an ARB rear air locker?

My other problem is I have no clue what these brakes are from they are Bendix with a number 2238366-R on the drivers front...haven't had time to look at the passenger side yet.

Please help, I'm at a place where I'm able to convert the fronts to whatever is best and recomended

Looks like you've got some serious rust issues. Have you taken the hub off yet?

Ya the hub is actually nice and greasy and clean of rust inside...I will be slowly cleaning up all the nasty stuff...just need a starting point. like should i get the gears done in the diffs or just find new axles...and if so where to start with that...all the rust is surface it has sat for a while...

For 33's I'd stay with the 3:73's if it's a road jeep or go 4:10's if it's going to see some trail riding.
I'd just do new gears if the rest of the axle is good, but than again if you can find different axles with the right gears already, cheaper, why not.

IIRC, Jeep CJ's prior to 1976 did not have disc braked front axles. They were drums. In 1976 front discs became optional, and in 1977 they were standard equipment. So..... Some one has either upgraded or swapped in another axle.

Early Dana 30s used a 11"x2" drum brake. Disk brakes were optional in 1976 and standard starting in 1977. Between '76-'78 the disk brakes used a large 10-1/2"x1-1/8" rotor. The "big brake" setup uses a 6 bolt caliper mounting bracket that goes between the knuckle and the spindle. The caliper is keyed to the mouting bracket and the rotor should apear wide when looking on edge. Rubber brake hoses with brass banjo fitting end. These rotors, calipers, and pads are compatible with the Scout II.

From 1979-1986 they used a 10-1/2"x7/8" rotor with a 2 bolt to knuckle caliper mounting bracket. From '79-'81 the caliper is keyed to the mounting bracket and uses rubber brake hoses with brass banjo fitting end. From '82-'86 the caliper is pin-bolted to the caliper bracket and the hoses are rubber crimped to steel line.

Also the rear axle from: Jeep Axle: Dana 44

Starting in 1972, the Dana 20 transfer case was used which has the rear output shaft centered, so the rear axle has the differential in the center. From 1972-1975 the Dana 44 was used with a 30 spline flanged axle shaft. This Dana 44 uses 11" drum brakes and the most common ratio is 3.73.
