gm-cj5 wiper motor help!

new to the forum so i hope i don't get bashed too quickly

I have just acquired a cj5 that looks great but i quickly found that the electrical is worse for wear.

The jeep has a gm column and with that created a large amount of splicing to the cj accessories. since ownership i have rewired 90 percent, but have now come to a standstill on this wiper motor. It never worked, but two of the three wires were twisted

to the slow/fast wires from the gm column.

the cj5 wiper motor is a three wire black/green/red and the one disconnected wire was the black one, so i assumed it was the ground. after a popped fuse when the wiper switch was turned on, i decided to inspect the motor itself and found that the plastic gear for the worm drive was in two pieces. After ordering and receiving a new motor i was going to try it again.... blown fuse number two.

so here is my question, what are the three wires from the cj5 motor? three speeds and it grounds itself to the windshield frame? does the gm wires need to run through relays? Sorry for the novel but please send help my way!

:ww: That is a very sweet looking CJ5 but it's not a '85 they stopped making the 5 in '83 and the only help I can give you on your wipers is it is only a two speed motor not three. I'm sure someone else will chime in with more info.

There are 3 wires on a 2 speed wiper.
One wire is for high speed
One wire is for low speed
One wire is for park. When you turn off your wipers they still need power just until a switch inside the motor detects that the wiper is out of the way. That's the black wire.

So in theory I just need to find the park wire off the gm column, and I'll be in business. I would think that a gm column in these would be a dime a dozen, and there would be a wealth of knowledge on the subject. But with your help, I may be on to something, just need to figure out which wire are which?

Auto zone .com has access to diagrams for the GM column so you can make the transition between the two. you will have to hunt through the site a bit to find them. I should do more but I am on my way out for the day.

let me know if you figure a way to make the intermittent work.

If the GM switch also has intermittent settings it wouldn't have a park wire.
If you wanted to modify your jeep to have an intermittent setting you would need a timing circuit to send a 12 volt pulse to that black Park wire. In the GM vehicles that timing circuit was called a wiper motor module and it was usually mounted on the motor.

I think the PO started wiring the wiper and couldn't figure out how to make the GM switch work with the Jeep motor.

EDIT: You've blown 3 fuses and I say put in a Jeep switch. You can see from the diagram the switch works with resistance. Set the switch to low resistance and the Wiper Module knows that means high speed. Set the switch to high resistance and the wiper module knows that is intermittent. Very high resistance means long delay between wipes.

And the park feature comes from the Wiper Motor module and not from the switch.

If you really want to make this GM intermittent switch work you need a Wiper Motor module. It is an intermittent switch isn't it?

i have no real desire to use the intermittent function on the switch just a hi and low will do, and this is gonna be the little ladies barbie jeep, because i've been told that when i try to wheel it with Dana 44 's and 38"s i'll snap an axle in no time flat. but i digress.

Anyways i have not much info on this rig, so i have no idea what this gm column came out of, but i just used the probe to check the gm harness. It appears that both the grey and white that the old motor was hooked up to, only show power when the switch is on the high setting. after checking the other wires, they all only showed power when the switch is on high

Since we don't know what the switch came out of you could strip all the wires then check what wires short only when you are on high.

You will not find a wire for the park feature since that comes from the wiper motor module.
I think it would be much easier to get a CJ wiper switch. Then you would be able to get the wiper to stop when it's out of the way.

That's because only the high goes directly. Low and park are controlled by the wiper motor module.

EDIT: Keep in mind that since you have an intermittent switch these wires (with the possible exception of high) did not go to the motor. They went to the wiper motor module.

No, you've got good axles. 30 splined flanged one piece axles.
I wish I had your axles. I have an AMC20 rear end with 36 inch tires.
Plus you've got a Dana 44 up front? Most CJs have a Dana 30 in front.

Yeah dave, since i didn't start the build on this truck i've had to do some research to see if i was being fed bull. but after checking the BOM numbers on both axles they were 44's

so could you elaborate a bit for me? if all wires on the column only show hot when set on hi, how do i move forward? any direction will help at this point.

If I were you I would scrap the idea of trying to use the GM turn signal.
I would hook up a CJ wiper switch. I assume the original one was removed. Is there a hole in the dash where it used to be? To wire up a CJ wiper switch is easy. 3 wires go from the switch directly to the motor according to the diagram I posted earlier.

Yes I know you have a GM multi-function switch on your steering column but I just see it being too much of a hassle to get it to work. It never will park the wiper out of view without extra circuitry.

well since this is a summer fun toy, it looks as though i will have working wipers from the switch........As long as it is set to high.
