I have a 79 CJ5 with AMC 304 V8. Replaced started and solenoid last year after the starter hung and melted when wife drove it. It ran until I parked it after replacement.

It has sat for several months and I am working on it. Will not start, the starter makes a grrrrrrr sound but does not attempt to crank. Solenoid body is cracked.

Attempted to tap on starter with hammer but does not make difference. Battery is good.

Help!!

Battery tests good and charged. Lights, wipers work as proven by daughter who turned all the switches on shortly before I put the battery back in Jeep. Battery shows 12.5 volts on multimeter and battery shows good on battery tester.

If the starter is making the noise. And your battery is good I would suspect the starter. But by the description i.e newer starter and solenoid that is unlikely. I assume that the engine will turn over by hand. If the motor was locked it would be one large thud when trying to crank rather than the grrrrrr noise you hear. I'm assuming this noise is a rapid ticking type noise.

meter both the solenoid and starter
the bendix needs that 12 volts if the solenoid is only giving you 6 then.....

Ok, I will check the voltages at the solenoid since the body is cracked. Then I will check voltage at starter.

As you stated the solenoid body is cracked so why not suspect it? This stuff is made off shore by the lowest bidder and for the most part subject to fail right out of the box. Also check your battery and cable connections. If things aren’t tight or the wire becomes frayed then even though you might get a proper voltage reading with your tester the cable may not be able to move enough juice (amps) to make the starter turn.
